Cody Bellinger spoke of what it meant to him to wear an FDNY hat as the Yankees played the Mets 25 years after 9/11
It wasn’t just another mid-September game. On Friday, the Yankees and Mets played on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. It was at Yankee Stadium, and on both sides, the emotions were high.
Before the game, New York legends Derek Jeter, Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Paul O’Neal, and other former players who played in 2001 stood in a moment of remembrance. Then, Brielle Saracini and her husband, Sean McGuire, who lost their fathers on that day, threw out the first pitch.
On both sides, players wore hats that read “FDNY” or “NYPD” in honor of New York’s firefighters and police officers.
In the end, the Bronx Bombers defeated their cross-town rivals 6-4. After the game, Cody Bellinger spoke of what it meant to him to wear an “FDNY” hat, per Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network.
“These are the days when it’s more than just a game,” Bellinger said. “A bigger-than-yourself moment. Just to take the field wearing all these different hats in New York, it’s a special feeling.”

Bellinger went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. As a result, the Yankees are now 85-62 and trail the Tampa Bay Rays by three games in the American League East Division.
The emotion-filled game touched everyone involved. Mets pitcher Nolan McLean said the city was “awesome” for going above and beyond to remember that day. Interim manager Andy Green called the game “special.”
The city that never sleeps once again showed its pride and resolve on an unforgettable day. The famed Subway Series closes on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
