While auto theft has improved in recent years, it remains a persistent issue. In Guelph, reported stolen vehicle occurrences declined by 29% between 2023 and 2024, but incidents rose again by 12.4% in 2025, underscoring the importance of continued action. Beyond the loss of a vehicle, these incidents
can have lasting impacts on financial security and peace of mind, reinforcing the value of proactive, community-based solutions. “At Co-operators, we know auto theft is not something any one organization can tackle alone,” said Tara Laidman, Vice-President, Home & Auto Insurance at Co-operators. “It takes strong partnerships, coordinated action and a shared commitment. improving coordination between law enforcement agencies across the country. By working together, we’re protecting residents and building safer communities across Guelph.” “Simple steps can make a meaningful difference in helping to prevent auto theft,” said David Doxey, Inspector of Investigative Services with the Guelph Police Service. “Parking in well-lit areas or inside a garage, using steering wheel or brake pedal locks, combined with additional deterrents such as video security and aftermarket GPS tracking systems can help make vehicles less attractive to thieves and reduce risk.”
Attendees also had the opportunity to learn about practical prevention tools, including a live demonstration of KYCS, a Canadian-based theft-recovery system designed to protect vehicles. Auto theft is insane, glad they’re “raising awareness” I guess.
So it went down 29% then up 12.4%… sounds like the problem never really left. I wonder if it’s because people aren’t getting prosecuted or something, not sure. Either way lock your car stuff lol.
Wait is this in Guelph Ontario? I thought auto theft was mostly in the US cities, like Chicago and stuff. If incidents rose in 2025 then maybe those “community partners” didn’t do enough? Also why is the insurance VP talking like she’s the police.
29% decline then 12.4% increase… that math is weird to me, like did they count differently or what. And they said “bail reform” in the title?? That’s the part that matters, because if people keep getting out quick they’ll just steal again. Also I bet half the cars are stolen because the owners leave keys in the cup holder (people actually do that).
