Claude AI outage hits users as errors spike

At 2:19 AM Eastern Time on June 2, 2026, the first signs of trouble didn’t come from a headline. They came from failed requests, loading issues, and service interruptions—then a fast climb in outage reports as Claude users compared notes online.

By the time the chatter spread, thousands of people were trying to access the AI assistant and running into disruptions. Posts filled timelines with screenshots and updates while many waited for an official word from Anthropic.

DownDetector showed the surge beginning around 2:19 AM Eastern Time, with reports climbing significantly as users pressed refresh and re-ran the same prompts that had worked the day before.

The pattern turned from “maybe it’s just me” to “something is wrong” once Anthropic acknowledged the incident on its official status page. The company confirmed elevated error rates across multiple Claude-related services.

In its first status update, Anthropic said it was investigating the issue. Less than an hour later, it posted a second update saying the root cause had been identified and that engineers were implementing a fix.

The disruption was not limited to one interface. Anthropic’s incident report described impact across several Claude products and services, including Claude AI, Claude Console, Claude API, and Claude Code.

That broad scope mattered because it reached both the consumer experience and the developer workflow. Developers using Claude through APIs may have experienced failed requests or reduced functionality during the incident. Regular users accessing Claude through the web interface could have encountered errors or difficulties generating responses.

The speed of the acknowledgement didn’t erase what users felt in the moment: the sudden interruption of a tool many people now lean on for work. Service outages involving major AI platforms tend to spread quickly. and even short disruptions can trigger widespread reports when businesses. developers. and everyday users are all depending on the same system.

There was also a second, quieter consequence—how quickly dependence becomes visible. Claude is used for content creation, software development, research, customer support, and business productivity. When services like Claude stumble. the impact can move beyond individual users and reach organizations that fold AI into daily workflows.

As Anthropic moved from investigation to implementing a fix. the incident underscored a basic reality: even the most advanced AI services run on complex infrastructure. and when that infrastructure falters. users feel it immediately. And for many. the status page isn’t just a technical checkpoint anymore—it’s the place people go to see whether their work can start again.

  1. I was literally using it for school and it wouldn’t load, then I thought it was my WiFi. But everyone’s screenshotting errors so yeah… outage. Kinda messed up timing.

  2. Wait so it says the cause was identified already but it still sounds like it was still broken? Like how do you “fix” something and not fully fix it right away. Also I’m seeing people blame “API” but I don’t even use the API and my prompts failed anyway.

  3. Not surprised, these AI companies always have some “elevated errors” message like that explains anything. If it hit Claude Code too then it probably crashed half the dev stuff and nobody could deploy. I tried refreshing like 20 times at 2am and it kept going in circles, so I switched to something else and it worked… until it didn’t, idk lol.
