Nearly 40 years after Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere stepped out as one of the iconic couples of the early 1990s, their children are now starring together on the FX show “The Shards.”
Homer Gere, 26, and Kaia Gerber, 25, are part of the cast of the teen serial killer drama helmed by Ryan Murphy and posed together on the cover of the September issue of Vogue. Their parents posed together for Vogue in 1992, making the latest cover shot a full-circle moment between the children of the supermodel and the actor, who divorced in 1995 after four years of marriage.
Crawford, 60, shared on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle Sept. 10 what it’s like to see the two working together and how she first met Homer Gere, who is Richard Gere’s son with actor Carey Lowell. Gerber is the daughter of Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber.
“I had never met Homer,” Crawford said. “I met him while they were filming. He’s lovely, and Kaia enjoyed working with him.”
Crawford also expanded on how the two young actors deal with being labeled “nepo babies.”
“They’re both in the same situation,” Crawford said. “They understand it’s going to be a question they’re going to get asked, but at the same time they both work really hard and think they’re both doing a great job.”
Crawford emphasized that Gerber works hard for her modeling and acting career.
“Look, there’s pros and cons to having famous parents,” Crawford added. “And I know sometimes it feels like pressure, or she feels like, ‘Wow.’”
For example, her daughter can do a modeling shoot and commenters may bring up that her mother wore the look first.
“I’m like, ‘I know,’ because I can talk about my mom and no one knew who that was, and (Gerber) doesn’t have that anonymity,” Crawford said. “But she also understands that it does open maybe some doors.”
Gerber spoke to Vogue about what it has been like growing up in the public eye due to her mother.
“Fame was something that I was born into, so I didn’t experience what it was like to become famous,” Gerber said. “I kind of thought that my way of being raised was the most anonymous it could get under the circumstances, and then I met Homer. Like, there are no photos of him as a child online, whereas my entire childhood and teenage years are on the internet. I can only imagine. I’m 24 but … very interviewed.”
Gerber began modeling at 13 and was walking runways at 16, according to Vogue.
“I’ve only ever been a nepo baby, and I’ve only ever benefited in my career from it,” she said “But I also find myself doing it to other nepo babies, thinking, like, OK, show me why you deserve this job. I said to Homer — because the concept is daunting to him, having lived as an adult so far without that perception, whereas I sort of went through it when I wasn’t fully sentient — I said to him, ‘Homer, unfortunately with this show, it’s not like you’re just any unknown actor and people will judge you as an unknown actor.’”
Homer Gere did not begin acting professionally until appearing in a small role in the final season of HBO’s “Euphoria” earlier this year.
“I didn’t grow up in the industry at all,” he told Vogue. “I had never been on a professional set until last summer.”
He and Gerber also didn’t ignore their unique connection when they both joined the cast of “The Shards.”
“Twenty minutes into knowing each other, I was like, ‘Should we just acknowledge the fact that our parents were married?’ She was like, ‘Yeah. Cool,’” he told Vogue. “And that was it.”
