Christian Gonzalez sends immediate reaction to massive contract extension

It is finally over. The New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez waited until less than two days before opening kickoff to get a deal done, but they have agreed to a record-breaking, four-year, $135 million contract extension. Fans can take a deep breath, and so can the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.

“Thank you Lord!” he posted on Instagram, per the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed. Although the 2024 Second-Team All-Pro did not actively hold out, he expressed frustration regarding the dragged-out talks. People wondered if a trade request was coming right before the Pats’ Super Bowl rematch with the Seattle Seahawks. The two sides beat the clock, however, and can now move forward with a common goal.

There will be much more pressure on Gonzalez, though. He wanted to reset the CB market, and with that privilege, comes the expectation that he will maintain excellence on the field. When the 2025 Pro Bowler is healthy, he is consistently stellar in coverage and can also back up linebackers with solid tackling skills.

Gonzalez does not boast eye-popping interception numbers, but that could be a consequence of his intimidating presence. Quarterbacks are forced to think twice when they throw in number zero’s direction. His valiant performance against Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba during Super Bowl 60 surely came up during negotiations and could be a big reason why the 24-year-old stood his ground for so long.

Christian Gonzalez had leverage to wield. The Patriots understand what kind of team they are without him. They did not want to face that reality, especially in the aftermath of the Mike Vrabel scandal. New England needs stability, and owner Robert Kraft just gave the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft a good chunk of coin to continue providing it.
