Chisholm’s late homer lifts Yankees past Guardians

Chisholm’s late – Isiah Kiner-Falefa Chisholm delivered a late, decisive home run as the Yankees beat the Guardians to extend their run, with Spencer Jones also going deep and Gerrit Cole working through five innings after returning from Tommy John surgery.

When the pitch came in from Tim Herrin, it looked like another moment that would pass. Then Chisholm stayed with it, drove a full-count slider into the right-field stands, and the Yankees found the kind of late punch that turns close games into final scores.

The home run was Chisholm’s third in his last six games, and it carried the Yankees to a victory over the Guardians. New York has now won three straight and is 10-4 since May 24.

Spencer Jones added his own impact early, launching his first major league home run as well. He also finished with a 443-foot shot after walking to start the second and then taking Slade Cecconi’s cutter down the middle of the plate. Jones was the 25th overall pick in the 2022 amateur draft.

Cleveland didn’t go away quietly. Angel Martínez collected two hits and an RBI, and the Guardians managed to even things in the third on RBI hits from Chase DeLauter and Martínez. DeLauter’s single scored José Ramírez and snapped an 0-for-18 slump for the Guardians with runners in scoring position.

It was his fourth start of the season since returning from Tommy John surgery. and the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner worked through a lineup that had been struggling to get production with runners on.

Cecconi, meanwhile, also stayed out there for five innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven.

The Yankees bullpen finished the job without drama. After working five scoreless innings, Camilo Doval (2-0) picked up the win after pitching the seventh. Fernando Cruz struck out four in 1 2/3 scoreless innings for his third career save and first this season. He walked the leadoff batter in the ninth before striking out the next three to close things out.
