Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes looks back to ‘old’ self after knee surgery recovery

Training camp is underway for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Patrick Mahomes is in the midst of recovering from surgery on his left knee. But the latest report regarding Mahomes seems to indicate that he looks like his regular superstar self.

During a segment on SportsCenter, ESPN’s Dan Graziano came away impressed with how the 30-year-old quarterback looked at training camp on Friday. Graziano claims Mahomes looked great while working in drills and practice with his teammates and appears he’s well on pace to start in the Chiefs’ Week 1 opener against the Denver Broncos.

“If you watched him throw today, you would think that nothing ever happened,” Graziano said. “He looked like old Patrick Mahomes. He had a laser beam down the middle of the field to rookie receiver Cyrus Allen in coverage that just blew the crowd away.”

This is about on par with what NFL analyst Peter Schrager was saying about Patrick Mahomes on Friday. Schrager claimed that the two-time MVP is ahead of schedule in his injury recovery, but did ponder how involved Mahomes will be in preseason games, as the Chiefs may protect the star quarterback before the first game of the regular season.

Regardless of Andy Reid’s preseason strategy, Mahomes is showing signs he’ll be back to full health in no time. The Chiefs will practice in pads come Monday. So, that will be another milestone step for the two-time First-Team All-Pro.

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee late last season. Through 14 games played, he recorded 3,587 passing yards and 22 touchdowns while completing 62.7% of his pass attempts.
