A Chicago man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for his role in a shooting at Oakbrook Center mall that erupted just two days before Christmas in 2021.
Steve Lane, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of armed violence on Wednesday, the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office said. The conviction stems from a confrontation that prosecutors described as turning violent at about 5:45 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2021, near Oakbrook Center’s Ann Taylor store.
That evening, Lane and Tyran Williams were arguing before they began shooting at each other, prosecutors said. Police reported at the time that Lane shot Williams. who underwent surgery after being shot in his back. calf and thighs. Williams was arrested at the scene, while Lane was arrested later after he fled.
The violence carried straight into the mall. Two women in their 40s were shot in their thighs. A woman in her 20s was shot in the foot. Another woman in her 20s broke her ankle while fleeing the scene, police reported at the time.
Even after the shooting, the danger didn’t stop. About 100 officers from multiple jurisdictions remained on scene hours afterward, as SWAT and tactical teams searched each store in the mall. Prosecutors said the sweep was completed six hours after the shooting took place.
“This display of such a complete and utter disregard for human life at a crowded mall just two days before Christmas is beyond comprehension,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
The case also threads into a larger timeline. Williams was fatally shot in a separate drive-by shooting in the Beverly neighborhood in March 2024.
