Chelsea threatens legal action over Maresca compensation row

Chelsea threatens – Chelsea are preparing to demand compensation from Manchester City if Enzo Maresca is appointed, with the west London club also ready to escalate through the Premier League if an agreement is not reached. The dispute is fuelled by allegations that Maresca spoke
Chelsea’s anger has a deadline — and it’s tied to Enzo Maresca’s next job.
Stamford Bridge officials are set to demand compensation from Manchester City should they appoint the Italian as Pep Guardiola’s successor. The proposal comes with a warning: if no figure is agreed. Chelsea could take the matter to the Premier League for investigation and legal action if compensation is not forthcoming.
The dispute isn’t just about money. Chelsea have been left incensed by allegations that Maresca spoke with City while still in post with them, a claim that fits uncomfortably with the acrimonious way his spell ended at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca left Chelsea on January 2. His departure was viewed as untenable after he skipped post-match media duties following a draw with Bournemouth. From there. the fallout only deepened: Liam Rosenior was later brought in as replacement but was unable to turn things around. and Chelsea are now led by a caretaker manager for the remainder of a deeply disappointing campaign.
Before the latest fight over compensation, Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali was asked about Maresca’s exit at a conference in Los Angeles last month. He insisted, “The change wasn’t the club’s decision,” before adding: “for reasons I can’t speak about legally”.
Eghbali also pointed to the cost of the disruption itself. “I think the reasons will become kind of clear in due course. But no, it’s not a change we wanted to make,” he said. “It’s a change that’s had a bit of a negative impact on the season. when you’re changing systems and personnel. And it’s one we’ve got to fight our way out of.”.
Those remarks arrive against a backdrop that Chelsea believe to be central to the case: Maresca’s exit wasn’t clean, and the relationship fractured before he ever left the building.
Maresca’s earlier record at the club makes the bitterness harder to ignore. After leaving Leicester City, where he guided the Foxes and won the Championship, he went on to win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup with Chelsea. Yet his time with the Blues deteriorated sharply.
This newspaper previously revealed that Chelsea bosses took the extraordinary measure of placing a member of medical staff on the bench during games. The intent was to ensure Maresca took players returning from injury off at pre-agreed times.
There were also warning signs before that level of control. Alarm bells first sounded after Chelsea’s December win against Everton. when Maresca described the preceding 48 hours as his “worst” at Chelsea due to a lack of “support”. He later refused to clarify the comments. Chelsea said the acrimony was tied to medical team guidelines. with the complaint reported as aimed at the team’s procedures. As Chelsea’s form worsened, tensions only grew.
Even after Maresca’s exit, the speculation around Guardiola’s eventual successor refused to die. Reports had suggested he could become the next City boss, especially after his working relationship with Guardiola — a bond that existed long before Chelsea ever entered the story.
At City, Maresca had been Under 23s coach and then first team assistant to Guardiola in 2022-23. The two had worked together during their spell at the Etihad Stadium. and speculation had been rife that he would eventually step into Guardiola’s role. Days after Chelsea’s Everton win in December. as reports emerged that Guardiola was considering leaving at the end of the season. Maresca was keen to play down links.
He said at the time: “I’m focused on the Newcastle game. I’m focused on my job.” He added: “Again, I signed a contract last year until 2029. I’m happy with that, and no more than that. It doesn’t affect me at all because I know that is 100 per cent speculation. In this moment, there is no time for these kind of things.”.
He insisted: “First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029 probably. My focus is just about this club and I’m very proud to be here. Again, it’s speculation.”
The speculation intensified anyway — and not just because of the Guardiola-Maresca connection. It grew stronger after a change of personnel in Maresca’s camp, when he chose to be represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes following the Club World Cup win.
For City, the transition to a post-Guardiola era is already being staged for fans. City are set to host a parade this weekend on Monday. where supporters are expected to be given the chance to say farewell to Guardiola. Over the course of a decade of dominance at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola won 17 major trophies.
Tonight, City travel to Bournemouth. Anything other than a victory would hand the title to Arsenal.
One story sits inside two different timelines: for City. the next chapter is already in motion with Guardiola’s farewell and a match that could decide the championship. For Chelsea. the reaction is more immediate and more personal — an argument that Maresca moved while he was still theirs. now escalating into compensation demands and potentially a Premier League investigation if City don’t meet their terms.
