Chelsea and Man City argue over Maresca compensation

Chelsea and Manchester City are in talks over compensation for Enzo Maresca after his sudden New Year’s Day exit left the Blues believing it helped fuel a disastrous Premier League season. As Maresca is set to replace Pep Guardiola at City, Chelsea is pushing

Chelsea’s season ended with a gut-punch familiar to anyone who has watched Stamford Bridge unravel too quickly—yet the fallout is now spilling into a different kind of fight. The club has moved into deep talks with Manchester City over compensation for Enzo Maresca. convinced his abrupt departure was a major factor in the “implosion” that saw them finish 10th in the Premier League and miss out on European football entirely.

Maresca was contracted to Chelsea until 2029 when he left on New Year’s Day. a decision that came without the kind of gradual transition clubs usually build for. At Stamford Bridge. the belief is that the timing mattered—so much so that his exit is now being treated as a key turning point in a season that fell apart after looking headed in the other direction.

Chelsea insiders also point to the way Maresca handled the lead-up to his departure. They were less than impressed by his “worst 48 hours” comments made less than three weeks before he and the club officially “parted ways.” That remark lands differently when you zoom out to what followed: the club’s collapse in form. and the scramble that followed to keep standards steady during a campaign that ultimately ended with no Europe.

In these compensation discussions, the value of the package Chelsea are seeking has not been disclosed. What is clear is the contract picture. Maresca had three-and-a-half years remaining—meaning there were still years left on the deal at the time he left. Including the club option of an additional year, that total becomes four-and-a-half years.

Chelsea also believe the situation worsened because they were, at least at first, in the right direction. The club appeared on course to qualify for the Champions League before their season blew up. a detail now sitting at the heart of why Chelsea view City’s pursuit of their departing coach as more than a routine managerial change.

Maresca’s next step is already taking shape. He has long been the favourite to replace Pep Guardiola. who he previously assisted at City. including during 2022–23 when City clinched the treble. The choice of Maresca has come with Guardiola’s blessing, and City is understood to have proposed a three-year deal.

What has made the story more tense inside Chelsea is the trail of contact that reportedly existed before the exit. Maresca previously informed his employers how he had spoken to City representatives about the possibility of replacing Guardiola this summer. On top of that. sources say Maresca—after leaving Chelsea—had effectively kept his attention on City. even though Tottenham. Real Madrid. Juventus and AC Milan previously contacted his representative. Jorge Mendes.

The speed of the transition is part of what could determine how negotiations proceed. It is not known whether these compensation talks will delay any announcement about Maresca’s role at City.

Jorge Mendes remains at the centre of Maresca’s representation. while Chelsea and City continue to work through the question now dominating the background to what is shaping up to be a Guardiola succession: what compensation should follow a sudden exit. especially when Chelsea believe the timing helped drive a Premier League collapse that ended with 10th place and no European qualification.

  1. Wait, Maresca left on New Year’s Day and they’re blaming that for finishing 10th? Like the whole season fell apart after one coach tweet or what?

  2. Chelsea always does this “implosion” talk like it was magic. If he had years left on the contract then why not just sue? Also those “worst 48 hours” comments—maybe City paid him off in the fine print lol

  3. I don’t even know what compensation means here because aren’t they mad he went to Man City? But it sounds like he’s replacing Guardiola so obviously City swooped in. Chelsea had a contract until 2029 right? So like they want the years back? Idk football finances confuse me, everyone always misses Europe and then points fingers.
