Chayka says Leafs still star-hunting despite stability

Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka says Toronto is continuing to explore moves as the July and August market opens, arguing that adding difference makers is part of a GM’s job. He said nothing is imminent, praised Morgan Rielly as a key leader despite a r

When John Chayka talked about the Maple Leafs’ summer, he didn’t sound finished at all. The general manager said he will keep exploring options, even with what he described as lineup stability already in place, and he pointed to a belief that the market should open up further in July and August.

On Sportsnet’s Real Kyper and Bourne on Thursday. Chayka said Toronto thinks it has “some good stability through our lineup now.” But he added that if the club can “add difference makers. ” then it should keep pushing. He also said it “does feel like there might be more liquidity in the market in these July. August months. ” framing the coming weeks as an opportunity to go after upgrades.

One name that sits at the center of the kind of conversation Toronto could have is Morgan Rielly. Rielly has a no-trade clause, and earlier this off-season it was reported that he submitted a list of four teams he would accept a move to. Chayka didn’t suggest anything is about to happen.

“There’s nothing imminent,” he said. He then focused on what Rielly represents to the organization. calling him “a leader” and the “longest-tenured Leaf. ” adding that there is “nothing but respect for him.” When asked about improving the group. Chayka said Toronto will “always consider everything. ” but at this juncture he described Rielly as “a big part of this.”.

Toronto has already tried to add quality. On July 1, the Maple Leafs went after improvement by signing veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and bringing in depth forwards including Nick Paul, Jack Roslovic, Teddy Blueger, Colton Sissons, Brandon Duhaime and Zack MacEwen.

Earlier in June, they also acquired defenceman Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Chayka’s comments also touched the edge of another possible target. Another blue-liner. Zach Werenski. had reportedly been on Toronto’s radar. but he had a late Wednesday statement saying he would be staying put in Columbus. In Chayka’s view, the work of a general manager doesn’t stop with roster reshuffling or filling depth.

“Purely philosophically, I think a general manager’s job is to star-hunt, first and foremost,” Chayka said. “This game can be changed by a few top players making a big impact on a franchise. so the depth piece matters. how you fill out a roster. how you manage the cap. that’s all necessary but not maybe sufficient.”.

He then described big-game pursuit as the top priority: “I think about the role of the general manager and their ability to go out and big-game hunt and I think that’s kind of priority No. 1.”

For all the roster activity, Chayka also set boundaries around one storyline involving Max Domi. He said the club’s glut of new forwards had “nothing to do with the health of Max Domi. ” who is dealing with complications stemming from back surgery earlier in the off-season. Chayka called Domi’s progress the “best news for everyone” and said, “He’ll come to camp.”.

Domi, 31, posted 12 goals and 24 assists in 80 games with the Maple Leafs last season. Chayka said the timeline for what happens after that is still unclear.

“We’ll get kind of a more firm view at that point,” he said, before adding that “I think Max is gonna be a big part of this, when that occurs is just a guess.”

Put together. Chayka’s message is straightforward: Toronto believes its roster has stabilised. but he is still aiming for impact players as the summer market shifts. He also made clear that even with names like Rielly and the wider trade conversations in the air. there’s no sense that a decision is suddenly imminent—especially with camp still ahead and Domi’s status tied to what the team sees when players report.

  1. I don’t get why they’re talking about Morgan Rielly like that if there’s “nothing imminent.” Just say you want a trade or don’t.

  2. Rielly has a no-trade clause right? So basically they can’t move him unless he’s cool with it… which means they’ll probably ask anyway. Also July/August liquidity?? sounds like money talk more than hockey.

  3. They better stop “exploring options” and just fix the team. Every summer it’s the same thing, and then playoffs come and they’re still missing some “difference makers.” Morgan Rielly is the longest-tenured Leaf so it’s kinda wild they even bring him up, like are they trying to trade leadership for one goalie sign or what?
