New Legion president pledges stability after closure

The newly elected president of the Burns Lake branch of the Royal Canadian Legion (#50) says his goal is to establish good governance. Following his election May 24, Charlie Rensby, who is also a council member for the Village of Burns Lake, said he wants to “set a stable course and ensure continuity for the coming years.” The local branch has had a rocky, recent past, having been forced to close its doors after experiencing significant financial trouble in 2024. However, the Legion has since

rebounded thanks to an auction held in 2025, as well as tireless volunteer work. That volunteer work is set to continue, with a new executive committee elected alongside Rensby, who is a new member of the Legion. “I am committed to serving this term as president of the Legion, fully, and my overall goal is to attract new volunteers… I am hoping I can inspire the next generation of volunteers to start being more involved in this Legion,” Rensby said. Marg Woskett was elected as

vice-president, Darlene Wipfli as secretary, and Linda Uchaz as treasurer. Members at large include: Derek Wipfli, Jason Brown, Daryl Critchlow, and Edmund Benoit. In a recent Facebook post, the Legion introduced the new team, stating the branch is looking forward “to keeping our Legion a strong and growing business in the community.”

  1. Good for them I guess. But closing in 2024 and then an auction in 2025 feels like the story was just “luck and vibes” not really governance.

  2. Wait so they shut down then came back because of an auction? That’s wild. Also Charlie Rensby being on village council… isn’t that like conflict of interest or am I misunderstanding what “governance” means here.

  3. Hopefully they actually attract younger folks because the Legion has always felt kinda stuck in the past. I’m glad volunteers kept it going but these “new executive committee” things always sound the same to me. Like did they already have plans for the next round of financial trouble or is it just gonna be another auction? Anyway, congrats to whoever got elected.
