Charlie Kirk Parkway may win state road funds

Florida lawmakers are considering state funding to extend Manatee County’s 51st Street West, named the Charlie Kirk Memorial Parkway.

A Manatee County road extension carrying the name Charlie Kirk is drawing fresh momentum at the state level, as lawmakers weigh additional transportation dollars that could keep the project moving.

The latest Transportation and Economic Development budget proposal from the Florida Senate preserves funding for the 51st Street West extension project tied to the county’s designation of the roadway as the Charlie Kirk Memorial Parkway.. Manatee County Commissioners approved the naming choice last year. shifting from an earlier plan to honor Kirk with a roadway that did not yet exist.

Commissioners said they initially considered naming an unbuilt roadway after Kirk rather than changing the name of an existing street.. That approach was meant to avoid two practical and political risks: the cost involved in renaming and the possibility of neighborhood backlash from residents who could see their addresses change.. The county ultimately settled on the 51st Street extension. after considering alternatives including Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. Moccasin Wallow Road. and other options.

At-large Commissioner Jason Bearden. who has chosen not to seek re-election this year. backed the idea that the naming could help attract state support for the transportation project.. The county has already received $6 million in federal Community Project Funding for the same effort as part of a Congressional appropriations package passed earlier this year.

Still, the county’s decision is entangled in broader state-local tensions.. Although officials said the designation was not made out of political sentiment, Gov.. Ron DeSantis vetoed all Manatee County government appropriations last year.. The veto followed friction between the county and the state over the impact of last year’s SB 180. a hurricane recovery law that triggered lawsuits from some local governments. including Manatee County. challenging the state.

As the state’s budget negotiations continue in an ongoing Special Session. both the Senate and the House have proposed funding for the transportation project. but they remain far apart on the final amount.. The Senate is holding at $3 million for the project after its initial offers. while the House has placed $1.5 million on the table.. Those competing proposals are part of negotiations that could still shift the number before lawmakers settle on a final package.

The naming decision traces back to Kirk’s death in September.. The founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative commentator was killed Sept.. 10 during a public appearance at Utah Valley University.. His death sparked memorial events across Florida, including in Manatee County, where a large gathering took place after his death.

Public response to the Manatee County proposal has been sharply divided.. Supporters have argued that Kirk’s influence. particularly among younger conservatives. justifies commemorating him in the form of a local landmark.. Critics. however. have objected on the grounds that they see Kirk as divisive and questioned whether a public roadway should become a memorial for a polarizing figure.

  1. so they renamed a whole street just to get money from the state lol thats honestly kind of genius in a messed up way. like they literally used his name as a coupon. i dont even care about the politics of it thats just funny to me

  2. this is exactly what i was talking about with florida man they will do literally anything down there and the worst part is the people whose addresses are gonna change have no say and probably never even heard of this guy and now they gotta update their drivers license and bank info and everything just because some commissioners wanted to score points with tallahassee or whatever and desantis vetoed everything anyway so what was even the point of any of this the whole thing is just a mess and nobody is thinking about the actual residents who live on that road

  3. DeSantis vetoed the funding because he hates Charlie Kirk now everyone knows they had a falling out last year this is all just political revenge dressed up as a road project
