CTA Bus Driver Escapes Knife-Wielding Kidnapper in Logan Square

A 57-year-old CTA bus driver escaped through a window after a knife-wielding man commandeered a bus in Logan Square.
A 57-year-old CTA bus driver made a dramatic escape early Wednesday after a knife-wielding man commandeered her bus and forced her off its planned route for several miles, authorities said.
The incident began at about 2:40 a.m. aboard the CTA’s No. 53 Pulaski bus in the 2400 block of North Pulaski Road, in the Logan Square area, according to police and the transit agency. A man riding the bus pulled out a sharp object and ordered the driver not to stop, police said.
Under the man’s demands, the driver complied and drove away from the route, traveling nearly six miles into the city’s Near North Side, officials said. No injuries were reported during the episode.
Not long after, the driver was able to climb out a window, police said. After that, a CTA supervisor tracked the bus, prompting authorities to locate and respond to the vehicle.
The suspect fled after the bus was identified, but was arrested shortly afterward on the Near North Side in the 100 block of West Chestnut Street, police said. Charges were pending as of the time of the report.
In a statement, the CTA praised police for their response, calling it swift and pointing to the immediate apprehension of the suspect. The agency said it is pushing for felony charges and will continue working with law enforcement to support the investigation.
The episode highlights the risk transit workers face even during late-night hours, when vigilance and rapid coordination can be crucial.. CTA relies on internal monitoring to identify disruptions. and in this case. that tracking appears to have helped speed up the response once the driver was able to exit.
Police said it was not immediately clear whether anyone else was on the bus at the time of the incident. Investigators will likely focus on the timeline of how the suspect boarded, how he issued commands, and what prompted the driver to leave through the window.
For riders and employees. the case may also renew attention on safety protocols and how agencies prepare staff to respond when a vehicle is taken under threat.. While no one was injured. the forced detour and the presence of a knife underscore how quickly everyday commutes can turn into a life-threatening situation.
As the investigation continues, the pending charges against the man are expected to reflect the seriousness of the allegations, and the CTA’s request for felony prosecution signals the transit agency’s view of the incident’s impact on worker safety and public security.

she climbed out a WINDOW tho
This is exactly why I stopped taking the bus at night, my cousin got followed off the blue line last year and nothing happened to the guy. Chicago just does not care about these workers at all and now they wonder why nobody wants these jobs anymore.
Wow late-night CTA and a knife already?? That’s insane.
wait so the passengers just sat there the whole time while this lady was being held at knifepoint for like six miles?? nobody tried to help her or call 911 or anything?? I swear people just stare at their phones and let stuff happen right in front of them. this is what society has become and im not even surprised anymore honestly. used to be people looked out for each other.
ok but why was the bus even running at 2am thats the real problem if they just stopped service after midnight none of this happens. I read somewhere they were gonna cut late night routes anyway so maybe this speeds that up. also didnt they defund transit police or something because that seems related. either way glad she got out safe but the city needs to just fix the whole system not just say they support workers and then do nothing like they always do every single time something like this comes out.
So she escaped through a window but nobody got hurt… how is that even possible? Like he commandeered the whole bus for miles and they just got him after? Sounds lucky tbh.
This just goes to show they should lock the doors or something. If the driver could climb out, why didn’t she just do that at first? Also “commandeered” like he just hopped on with the knife… I swear half these incidents are because nobody pays attention.
Felony charges please. But I’m confused—CTA says their tracking helped and then it says police located it and responded. Isn’t the CTA supposed to stop it remotely or something? Also Logan Square always feels sketchy at 2:40am so… be careful riders.
