Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey suffered an apparent injury during his team’s Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
McConkey’s injury occurred as the receiver was trying to make a catch while breaking over the middle of the field. He took a hard shot from Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. and reached for his back while lying on the ground after the play.
McConkey remained down and received treatment from Chargers medical staffers after the injury. He eventually got up, walked off the field under his own power and headed to the blue medical tent for further evaluation.
However, shortly thereafter, McConkey came out of the blue medical tent and went into the locker room.
The Chargers announced McConkey was “questionable” to return to Sunday’s game because of a chest injury, but he did not return to the game.
Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh did not provide an update about McConkey’s status after the game. Quarterback Justin Herbert simply said the team was “hoping for the best” when asked about his teammate.
“It’s always tough losing a guy like Ladd, we are hoping for the best but we are thankful for the guys behind that stepped up and have to make plays,” Herbert said.
McConkey had recorded a team-high five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown before exiting the game.

Tre’ Harris is listed as McConkey’s top backup on the Chargers’ depth chart. Harris, a second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, recorded 30 catches for 324 yards and a touchdown during his rookie season.
The Chargers have six receivers dressed for their Week 1 game against the Cardinals. Below is the pecking order within the unit, according to the team’s official depth chart:
- Ladd McConkey
- Quentin Johnston
- Tre’ Harris
- Brenen Thompson
- Derius Davis
- KeAndre Lambert-Smith
If McConkey misses time, Johnston and Harris would likely soak up a majority of the team’s targets at receiver. Thompson would serve more as a situational speed threat in McConkey’s stead.
