Birkenhead’s Charcool closes, sells site for refurb

A Birkenhead restaurant is shutting up shop as it says it’s “time for a new chapter”. Charcool Turkish Grill & Bar opened in Pensby in 2024, bringing authentic Turkish cuisine and traditional charcoal-grilled dishes to the local dining scene. The venue’s menu prided itself on serving everything from meats, sharing platters, meze, and seafood, to vegetarian dishes and traditional desserts. However, this won’t be the case anymore as the restaurant has officially served its last set of customers under the current team. The team, who

have now sold the site on, said: “We want to sincerely thank all of our wonderful customers for your support, loyalty, and memories over the years. It has truly meant so much to us, but the time has come for a new chapter. “The new owners will be carrying out refurbishment work, which means the restaurant will remain closed for approximately the next three weeks. Thank you again for all your support and kindness – we wish the new owners every success for the future.”

The restaurant is among the top restaurants on Tripadvisor for Birkenhead, where it states the team are “confident” they will serve the “best grill food you ever had.” It comes after the ECHO reported on another new restaurant in Birkenhead . The area is now home to the first Zinglet site. The venue is from pizza giant Caprino’s – a brand that already has more than 110 stores nationwide. The 40-seater chicken restaurant, located on Conway Street, offers a fully Halal menu of hot chicken,

chicken wings and buttermilk fried chicken, as well as loaded fries, onion rings and a range of thick milkshakes. The venue opts for a gen-z aesthetic of electric orange cutting through primarily black designs, with graffiti accent walls and kiosks. The restaurant’s founders, Khalil Rehman and Gul Nawaz , launched Zinglet on May 15 and are confident it can be upscaled drastically to become “the UK’s leading hot chicken brand”. The ECHO’S Christopher Megrath reviewed the restaurant. He said: “The menu features all the classic

fried favourites you’d expect from a chicken restaurant. While there’s little in the way of innovation, you can’t really complain as all of the usual big hitters are present. I ordered two tenders in Daredevil spice – the hottest option available – along with three wings coated in the milder Screaming spice and a side of onion rings. The standout item, however, was the Zinglet signature burger, which I tried with the Signature spice to experience what the brand considers its defining flavour. “As a

glutton for wings, these were my first target. The coating was more akin to a dry rub than sticky or juicy, which is often the case when they’re drenched in some sort of hot sauce. I was thrilled to discover I’d been given four wings instead of the promised three, which was a great surprise as I devoured them in no time.” You can read the ECHO’s full review of the new venue here.

  1. Wait so it’s closing because of the new Zinglet thing? Kinda seems like Birkenhead can’t keep places open anymore. Hopefully they don’t change the menu too much.

  2. “Time for a new chapter” is just restaurant talk for “we’re outta money” lol. If it was top on TripAdvisor then why shut down right after opening? Also who sells a place that’s “confident” it’s the best grill food ever had.

  3. Conway Street is getting wild. First one chain, then another, and now “refurbishment work” for 3 weeks. I don’t even care about Turkish desserts, I just want good chicken… but with the Halal menu and all that gen-z orange, it’ll probably be packed.
