Chaos erupts outside Mexico City World Cup stadium as protesters clash

Chaos outside – The opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa kicked off with a stark contrast: celebration inside Mexico City Stadium, while violent scenes erupted just outside the gates as protesters fought riot police. A man also suffered a suspec
Flares cracked the air and rocks flew just 10 minutes before the Mexico–South Africa tournament opener, as hundreds of protesters pushed toward the inner ring of Mexico City Stadium — the iconic 87,000-seater Estadio Azteca.
Inside, the start of the World Cup brought noise and motion. An opening ceremony headlined by Shakira set the tone, and Mexico scored within the first 10 minutes of the game. Outside, the atmosphere hardened into something else. Riot police were deployed from Gate C, forcing protesters back along the road they had approached from. Tear gas was fired, and police threw rocks back.
The unrest drew attention for both its scale and the determination of those trying to breach the venue gates. The footage and accounts shared around the stadium suggested numbers around 2. 000 protesters and roughly 300 riot police. along with a mounted unit at Gate 8. Police pushed demonstrators away as attempts to force entry continued. with witnesses describing smashed disruption around the ground near the stadium. including a lorry parked near the venue.
One independent tragic incident also unfolded during the commotion. Videos circulated showing a man who appeared to have suffered a heart attack receiving CPR from a group of medics as he made his way into the stadium. The Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City later reported that he was rushed to hospital and is now in a stable condition.
As the violence outside was eventually quelled and the game moved on. extra security lines were set up at the stadium gates to protect those inside. After the initial crowd-control effort, riot police were lined up within the gates, while additional personnel were brought in. During the wider security response. an incident involving a policewoman was seen on the spot: she was reportedly taken away after slipping in and out of consciousness with a bleeding gash on her head.
The protests were not a last-minute surprise. Ahead of the opening match. it had been reported that eight simultaneous protests were planned around Mexico City to coincide with the World Cup’s start. The groups were expected to include heartbroken families of those affected by the ongoing drug war between cartels and law enforcement. the CNTE (teachers’ union). Federal Judiciary workers. transport workers. healthcare workers. and farmers’ organizations.
Even with that planning, authorities moved quickly to contain disruption. When the violence unfolded, four Metro stops were immediately closed on Mexico City Metro Line, while protesters knocked down multiple guardrails outside the stadium.
Clara Brugada Molina. the head of government of Mexico City. had earlier made no attempt to stop the protests from occurring. arguing the timing could be part of the event. She said: “this is a city where these events can coincide.” She also described it as a question of rights and coexistence. saying. “There is a right to protest as well as to experience the joy of living a World Cup. ” as reported through MVS Noticias.
On the pitch. Mexico’s early goal helped underline the contrast that played out all evening: celebration and football inside Estadio Azteca. and a tense. chaotic scene outside its gates — with protesters trying to force their way in. riot police holding the line. and a separate medical emergency adding to the strain on the day’s opening spectacle.

Damn. World Cup already got ugly before halftime.
I saw the clips and it looked like they were throwing rocks like right next to the stadium entrance. Also why are they always doing tear gas at big events, seems excessive.
Wait so the guy with the CPR was from the protesters? I can’t tell, the video angle is weird. Either way, heart attack or tear gas fumes, that’s scary. And Shakira inside and then chaos outside is so random it makes no sense.
This is what happens when they let crowds get too close to the gates. 2,000 protesters and only 300 police sounds like they planned for failure tbh. I don’t even follow soccer like that but Mexico City always got drama. They said Gate C and Gate 8 like that solves anything… somebody should’ve just shut it down earlier. Also I swear the lorry thing is like a setup or something, idk.
