Central Southland get reward for progress in rugby

Talented first five Lachie Forde slipped over for three tries in an impressive individual effort. He used his pace to turn half-gaps into scoring opportunities. Lock Finlay McDowall claimed the player of the day honours. McDowall stuck his head down and grafted. He took care of business in the lineouts and scrum and helped secure front-foot ball for Forde to run amok. Tighthead prop Ben Robson made sure the scrum was travelling forward. He also made some strong carries. Coach Jesse Saunders was pleased with

his side’s execution. ‘‘The key was to bring back in a wee bit of structure in what we’re doing and just improve some of the basics that we’ve struggled with in the last few games,’’ Saunders said. ‘‘So, the boys for the last few games have just panicked a wee bit when we’ve got the ball. ‘‘But today we were really concentrating on giving ourselves time that we didn’t panic.’’ In the only other games played in a quiet round, St Kevin’s beat South Otago

41-28 in Oamaru, Wakatipu beat Dunstan 31-10 in Alexandra, and Hokonui Colleges edged Mt Aspiring 26-17 in Wānaka.
