Celtics reportedly sign former Providence College standout to tryout contract

Devin Carter is a former Big East Player of the Year during his time at Providence College.
The Boston Celtics are rolling the dice on a former lottery pick ahead of training camp.
According to several reports, the Celtics are signing former Providence College star Devin Carter to a training camp tryout contract.
HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto was the first to report Carter’s signing on Monday, with NBA insider Jake Fischer linking Boston to the third-year guard over the weekend after the Hawks waived him on Friday.
Brian Robb of MassLive added on Monday that the Celtics signed Carter to an Exhibit 10 contract — which is a non-guaranteed deal that can eventually be converted into a two-way contract if that player impresses the team during camp and sticks with the franchise.
As part of an Exhibit 10 deal, Carter can also secure a bonus if he is released by the Celtics and joins Boston’s G League team.
Carter — the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Providence College — has yet to find his footing in the NBA ranks so far.
He appeared in 74 games over the previous two seasons with the Sacramento Kings — averaging 18.4 minutes, 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game during the 2025-26 campaign.
Sacramento eventually traded Carter to Atlanta in June, but the 24-year-old guard was waived by the Hawks over the weekend — making him a free agent.
Carter will look to earn a spot on Boston’s roster alongside other Exhibit 10 players in Milos Uzan and Tucker DeVries.
The Celtics have had plenty of success lately taking fliers on Exhibit 10 players, as Ron Harper Jr. arrived in camp last season an Exhibit 10 deal and turned it into a two-way contract — eventually earning a three-year, $9 million contract extension with Boston.
The Celtics are holding out hope that Carter can benefit from a clean slate and rekindle the shooting touch that he put on display during his time with the Friars.
Carter — who also played high school basketball at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire — took home Big East Player of the Year honors in 2023-24 after averaging 19.7 points per game while converting on 37.7 percent of his shots from 3-point range.
