Celtics Giannis – Trade talk linking Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Celtics is picking up, but ESPN’s Brian Windhorst points to two potential stumbling blocks: disrupting Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s pairing and forcing Boston to overhaul the way it plays offense. Windhorst al

Trade rumors don’t usually move like this—quiet in the background one day, then suddenly loud enough to reshape the conversation around Boston’s next big move.

In recent days. the Boston Celtics have shown interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo. according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. who laid out two potential stumbling blocks during an appearance on “Get Up!” Windhorst’s first concern is simple. and it cuts to the heart of how the Celtics have built their identity around two stars.

“On a Celtics offer has a stumbling block,” Windhorst said. “No. 1, you’d be potentially breaking up [Jayson Tatum] and Jaylen Brown.”

Tatum and Brown have made six of the last 10 Eastern Conference Finals, and the Celtics won a title together in 2024. Since 2022, Boston has also had a top-three seed in the Eastern Conference every year.

Windhorst’s second stumbling block is about basketball fit—less about who stays, more about what the team would have to become.

“No. 2, it would mean changing the entire structure of the way the Celtics play basketball.”

That structure is built on a precise offensive rhythm. The Celtics’ offensive identity has leaned heavily on a high volume of 3-point shooting. During the playoffs. Boston led the league in 3-point attempts. shooting 46.1 per game. which accounted for 52.5 percent of their total shot attempts. In the regular season, the Celtics also led the league in 3-point attempts during two of the past three seasons.

Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has said the organization prefers dunks over threes. He added that the team needs personnel changes to get players who can make more of an impact at the rim. Stevens also said the Celtics struggled to generate quality offensive looks during their first-round series loss to Philadelphia.

Antetokounmpo, of course, is built for inside scoring. He is one of the league’s premier inside scorers, and he has averaged fewer than two 3-point attempts per game in each of the last three seasons. Last season, he led the league in points in point per game.

Windhorst also described a different layer to the trade picture: where Antetokounmpo wants to go. He said Antetokounmpo is interested in joining the Miami Heat. Windhorst said the Heat and Bucks have been talking for months, but no deal has been reached yet.

The Bucks, meanwhile, plan to make a decision ahead of next week’s NBA draft. Windhorst said. “The league believes that this is finally going to happen. ” and added that Antetokounmpo could still re-sign with the Bucks. Talks, he said, have intensified over the last 7-10 days. He also pointed out that because Antetokounmpo has one year left on his contract. he has some control over where negotiations go. saying Antetokounmpo has focused on wanting to be a member of the Miami Heat.
