Cavaliers plan return of Atkinson, staff, front office

The Cleveland Cavaliers are moving toward the one thing their season didn’t always promise: stability.

After being swept in the Eastern Conference Finals by the New York Knicks, the Cavaliers are reportedly planning to bring back head coach Kenny Atkinson along with his entire coaching staff and the team’s entire front office. The Athletic’s Joe Vardon reported the plan on Tuesday.

It’s a striking choice given what happened on the court. Cleveland reached the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. the last time they made the NBA Finals with LeBron James still on the roster. But once the postseason began turning into a test of durability rather than hope. the Cavaliers’ path was anything but smooth. They needed seven games against both the Toronto Raptors and the Detroit Pistons before finally reaching the Knicks.

Then came the end: a New York sweep.

Even the moment leading into that conclusion carried a jolt of tension. While the Cavaliers were on the verge of being swept. Atkinson said Cleveland was actually ahead “analytically.” For a coach relying on an approach built around what his model suggested. it became a brutal disconnect when the postseason results didn’t follow the prediction.

Cleveland’s expectations were already loaded long before the Knicks arrived. The Cavaliers entered the 2026 season with the most expensive roster in the league, fueled in part by the trade-deadline acquisition of James Harden to pair with fellow max player Donovan Mitchell.

Now, the roster questions won’t wait for offseason comfort. Cleveland will have decisions to make on both Harden and Mitchell—Harden can be re-signed, and Mitchell is extension eligible.

At the center of all of it is the same contrast: the franchise’s push for continuity on the sidelines and in the front office. set against a postseason that demanded grind after grind. only to end with a sweep. For Cleveland. stability is the next bet—one that will be tested quickly. starting with what happens next for Harden and Mitchell.

  1. I’m confused… if it was “analytically” ahead then why are they getting swept? Sounds like coach speak to me. Also that Harden/Mitchell thing is gonna explode somehow.

  2. Wait, they’re keeping the whole front office too? I figured at least ONE person would get fired after that Knicks series. And if they have the “most expensive roster” like the article says, maybe it’s not talent, maybe it’s just chemistry not working. Or maybe Atkinson is secretly a genius and the model just needs one more season??

  3. This is why people hate sports management. You lose and it’s like, “nah let’s try again with the same people.” Harden and Mitchell contract stuff is already stressful, and then they act surprised the playoffs were brutal. Also didn’t LeBron get traded away years ago, like that’s literally the same roster story every time. Anyway go Cavs I guess, but damn.
