Yet the case for Carrick is anchored in what his leadership has produced on the pitch since taking over in January.. That run has also delivered Champions League qualification with room to spare. reframing the debate away from questions of CV and toward the practical reality of outcomes.

Those results land with extra weight because Carrick is not being judged only on this stretch.. He had previously stepped into a caretaker role in 2021. when Manchester United drew one and won two of his three games against Arsenal. Chelsea and Villarreal before handing over to Ralf Rangnick.. Taken together. it reinforces the sense that Carrick’s impact at Old Trafford is not a one-off anomaly but something that has already been tested in different competitive contexts.

The circumstances he inherited also matter.. Manchester United’s situation after Ruben Amorim’s tortured self-flagellation and fallout with director of football Jason Wilcox left the club plunged into turmoil.. Carrick and his backroom staff arrived with the task of stabilising an environment that had already shaken confidence throughout the club’s staff. players and fanbase.. The report stated that Carrick has since galvanised United. drawing on deep familiarity with the institution built up over many years.

A significant part of that steadiness is reflected in the way Carrick conducts himself.. Of course, the biggest question is whether Carrick fits everyone’s profile of a long-term United manager.. The possibility of alternatives is acknowledged in the report. including the idea that if Luis Enrique had been available. or if a number of national team coaches had not been tied up at the World Cup until mid-summer. the outcome might have looked different.. That reality does not remove the reservations; it simply explains why the “obvious choice” has emerged from the options that actually exist.
