Adam Carolla didn’t wait long to draw a line between what he sees as political theater and what he says is real harm.
On Tuesday. the veteran podcaster broke into a furious rant about President Donald Trump’s revamp of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. arguing that the widely debated project “does not affect average Americans one bit.” In Carolla’s view. when Democrats complain about the pool. they sound out of touch—trading substance for symbolism.
He pressed that point by portraying Democrats’ criticism as performative. “Everything for Democrats is symbolic. It’s all symbolic,” Carolla said on his show. “It’s all like, ‘It’s cruel!. He’s mean!. He’s doing a thing!’ It doesn’t make any difference. the f*ckin’ reflecting pool. whatever he’s doing [does] not have any actual impact on anybody ever.”.
Carolla’s anger, though, wasn’t floating in isolation. He started the rant after playing a clip of ex-President Joe Biden ripping Trump and his “vanity projects” at a Democratic Party Gala in Maryland last weekend. That event didn’t just include political criticism—it also included backlash.
Biden was booed at the same gala, and one protester yelled “Genocide Joe” over Biden’s approach to Israel’s war in Gaza.
For Carolla, the contrast between Biden’s framing of Trump’s changes and Biden’s own record was the whole point. He said he couldn’t stand the clip of Biden attacking Trump’s projects, especially in light of Carolla’s view that Biden’s handling of immigration was catastrophic.
“You, old man, let in 15 million people into this f*ckin’ country and we have no idea who they are,” Carolla vented. “Some are terrorists, others are rapists and killers. That’s impactful. The reflecting pool doesn’t make a difference to anybody. No one, you understand?”
Carolla has made his position clear on his show in recent years. He has said he’s tired of progressive politicians and supports Trump on most matters. Earlier this year. Carolla and Bill Maher also ripped liberals on Maher’s Club Random podcast for what they described as “groupthink.” In that conversation. Carolla said he believed liberals have a burning desire to make others “conform” to their views. and Maher said he dealt with that firsthand during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The Tuesday rant—triggered by Biden’s gala remarks and the uproar around them—boils down to a familiar Carolla fight: if the argument is about optics. he wants the conversation shifted to consequences. and if Biden is asking voters to condemn Trump’s “vanity. ” Carolla says the focus should start elsewhere.
