Cargo train derailment halts Framingham/Worcester commuter service

A cargo train derailed at the Framingham MBTA station Tuesday afternoon, blocking a nearby road crossing and delaying trains on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail line, including the cancellation of one scheduled departure.

A cargo train derailment at the Framingham MBTA station turned a routine Tuesday evening commute into a scramble for passengers heading on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail line.

The derailment happened at the station, blocking a nearby crossing at the intersection of Concord Street and Waverly Street, police said at 3:45 p.m. on Facebook. By 5 p.m., the crossing was cleared and reopened, but the commuter lot remained inaccessible.

Train service in both directions was delayed. Train 1561, scheduled to run from South Station to Framingham at 4:55 p.m., was canceled. The MBTA moved to cover the gap by rescheduling Train 559, scheduled to run to Worcester, to replace it; Train 559 made all local stops along the Framingham route.

The MBTA said it first reported the derailment at 3:44 p.m. as “an earlier train with a mechanical issue.” By 6:30 p.m., no other train cancellations were reported, though several trains were running up to an hour behind schedule.

Framingham police and the MBTA had not yet commented on damage to the derailed train. An image released by police appeared to show the derailment itself was relatively minor, even as the disruption to crossings and commuter service continued into the evening.
