Canvas cyberattack ended, but UCLA students still scrambling

A cyberattack on Canvas left UCLA students dealing with rescheduled exams, shifted homework deadlines, and missed notifications a week later—while Instructure says it reached a deal with hackers to restore systems and delete stolen data.

When UCLA students logged into Bruin Learn after the Canvas shutdown. the platform was back—but the damage had already spilled into their schedules.. One week after the cyberattack that temporarily took Canvas offline. some students are still catching up on assignments and exams that moved. deadlines that shifted. and messages they never received.

Instructure. the parent company of Canvas. said it reached a deal with the criminal extortion group ShinyHunters to restore Canvas. return stolen data to school districts and universities. and destroy any copies made.. The hackers claimed they had breached data—including private conversations and information identifying students and faculty—of more than 275 million worldwide users at more than 9. 000 schools.

Even as access gradually returned across the country, California students experienced uneven timelines and lingering disruption.. Students at CSU campuses regained access to Canvas on May 8, while University of California students remained locked out through Saturday.. At some California community colleges, including Fresno City College, Canvas access wasn’t restored until Monday.

At UCLA, Bruin Learn—the campus’s primary learning platform—lost access for three days after the Canvas hack.. The outage suspended students’ ability to view grades, assignments, and take exams tied to the system.. By the time the software came back. some classes had already adjusted their course calendars—and students said those changes created confusion right up to Memorial Day weekend.

Computer science midterm moved twice, flights now in jeopardy

Shayla Kumaresan, a second-year computer science student, said she was originally set to take a midterm on Thursday.. When the Bruin Learn outage interrupted access, her professor rescheduled the exam to May 21, the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend.. After students complained, the professor moved it again two days earlier.

Kumaresan said the shifting dates angered classmates who had already booked nonrefundable plane flights for the holiday weekend. Many assumed they could skip class on the Thursday before Memorial Day because computer science classes at UCLA are often recorded.

As students pushed back, dozens posted complaints on Piazza, an online, anonymous discussion space for students and teachers. One anonymous student wrote in the thread that they had booked travel based on the syllabus and initially announced midterm dates, and asked that the midterm stay on 5/14.

Kumaresan said the professor made the announcement about the second date change on Piazza rather than through email, so she didn’t receive a notification and almost missed it.

“It was just a really confusing situation,” she said. “I wasn’t sure what was happening, and that was stressful.”

With the midterm delayed by nearly a week, she said she also had to study more material than originally planned because the exam would include an extra week’s worth of content.

The fallout didn’t stop with exams, either. Kumaresan said she had to complete an assignment due last Friday that she couldn’t access on Canvas—but still needed to submit on a separate platform called Gradescope.

“My friends in the class all received the PDF for the assignment in an email from the teacher, but I didn’t for some reason,” she said. “I was freaking out, but thankfully my friend was able to forward me the assignment.”

Assignments piled up over Mother’s Day weekend, communication gaps deepened stress

For Alexandra Maggio. a second-year biochemistry student at UCLA. the shutdown meant not only missed access but also a compressed scramble that spilled into her time at home in San Diego.. She said she couldn’t fully enjoy Mother’s Day weekend because she had multiple assignments due Saturday evening on Bruin Learn that she hadn’t started—and couldn’t open.

Maggio said the lack of professor communication made it worse. She heard only on Saturday afternoon, when instructors realized the access problem. She worried the delay could have hurt her grades.

“It definitely was weird because I didn’t hear anything from my professors even though I had a lot of assignments coming up that I would want to access,” Maggio said.

Many UCLA professors use Bruin Learn not only for assignments but also to communicate with students—sometimes through announcements on the platform or by linking to student emails. With Bruin Learn unavailable, Maggio said she and others were left waiting.

She said professors were initially unaware that students couldn’t access deadlines. Later, instructors delayed assignments, and she said she was grateful for the accommodation. But the changes still disrupted her study plans.

“I was supposed to be studying this whole week,” Maggio said. “But then I ended up doing those assignments Monday instead of getting them done over the weekend like I planned.”

Where the hack stands now

In its statement. Instructure said it reached an agreement with ShinyHunters that included returning stolen data to affected districts and universities and destroying copies. alongside restoring Canvas service.. Instructure did not change the fact that students still had to deal with classroom reshuffling triggered by the outages.

For UCLA students like Kumaresan and Maggio. the cyberattack may have ended. but the consequences lingered in the practical things students live by: when deadlines appear. how announcements reach them. and whether missed notifications become missed time—especially as finals approach and Memorial Day plans sit on the edge of every rescheduled date.
