Canton educator Jeffrey J. Holland remembered for teaching compassion

When Jeffrey J. Holland walked into a classroom, it wasn’t just lessons that followed—his patience, kindness, and steady belief in students did, too. He died on June 12, 2026, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 44, leaving behind a community that knew him as more than a teacher.

Holland was born on October 23, 1981, in Boston. He grew up as the son of Laura Holland of Canton and the late John Holland. surrounded throughout his life by a large extended family that he valued deeply. He remained closely connected to the people who knew him best. and he carried that sense of family with him into everything he did.

After graduating from Boston College High School, Holland earned his bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University. At Fairfield. he served as a Eucharistic Minister at the school’s church and helped formulate the first retreat for his graduating class—experiences his obituary describes as showing the discipline. character. and faith that guided him for his whole life.

He later received his master’s degree in education from Salem State University, building on those foundations as he moved toward a career dedicated to teaching and learning.

His professional life centered on education, where the impact he made was not abstract. Holland taught fifth grade in Boston Public Schools, most recently at Sarah Roberts Elementary School, formerly the Charles Sumner School. Colleagues and students will remember him as an educator known for warmth and dedication. someone who brought compassion and energy into the classroom each day and took pride in helping young people grow with confidence.

His commitment extended beyond school walls. He served as president of Habitat for Humanity in New Haven. Connecticut. reflecting a belief in service. faith. and the importance of strengthening communities. Even outside his work, his life was described as being shaped by loyalty, friendship, and joy. A lifelong resident of Canton. he also found something special in a tradition he kept each summer—traveling to Aruba for five weeks.

Holland will be remembered for his kind heart, his devotion to his family and friends, his love of teaching, and the many lives he touched along the way.

He is survived by his mother, Laura Holland; his large extended family; his girlfriend, Dana Kopec; and many friends, students, and colleagues who will miss him.

Visiting hours are set for Wednesday, June 17, at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington St., Canton, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Thursday morning, June 18, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton. Burial will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, W. Roxbury.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
