Canadiens lock Jakub Dobes with three-year deal

Canadiens sign – Jakub Dobes has been signed to a three-year contract extension with the Montreal Canadiens through the 2029-30 season, with an average annual value of US$5.36 million. The 25-year-old goalie is coming off a breakthrough rookie run that carried Montreal to the
Jakub Dobes got the call and, on a Zoom call Thursday, he talked like a player trying to protect something bigger than his own future.
The Montreal Canadiens signed the goaltender to a three-year contract extension through the 2029-30 season. The agreement carries an average annual value of US$5.36 million.
“I’m really happy, especially for my family … I don’t feel like the money is too important to me. I’m just happy I can focus on hockey and have a clear mind and try to win a championship in Montreal. ” Dobes said. For a Canadiens team staking its short-term hopes on long-term belief. that message landed in the same place as the numbers.
Dobes opened the season as Sam Montembeault’s backup. By the time Montreal needed a steady presence in net, the 25-year-old had taken over as the starting goaltender, posting a 29-10-4 record with a 2.78 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in 43 games.
His run didn’t just secure wins. It put him among the league’s rising names. Dobes led all NHL rookie goaltenders in victories and was named to the league’s All-Rookie Team.
In the playoffs, he carried that momentum through Montreal’s deepest stretch. Dobes started all 19 playoff games as the Canadiens advanced to the Eastern Conference final. recording a 2.66 goals-against average. a .908 save percentage and nine victories. Those nine postseason wins were tied for the third-most by a rookie goaltender in franchise history.
The timing of the extension mattered, too. It came one day after Montreal signed rookie forward Ivan Demidov to an eight-year, US$73.2-million contract extension. Dobes now joins a growing group of young Canadiens locked into long-term deals. including captain Nick Suzuki. Cole Caufield. Juraj Slafkovsky. Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson.
Dobes framed the next step as a collective decision. “I’m just excited that everyone is on the same page … I feel like we have a lot of potential … in the next couple of years to get something exciting done,” he said. “I’m very proud of the guys, too. You know, everyone’s staying here and keeping the same team together.”.
Even before he became Montreal’s No. 1, the path had been clear. Dobes was selected by Montreal in the fifth round, 136th overall, of the 2020 NHL Draft after one season with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. He spent two seasons at Ohio State before turning pro in 2022-23.
He made his NHL debut late in the 2024-25 season before taking over Montreal’s crease midway through last season. Through 59 regular-season games, Dobes owns a 36-14-7 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage.
With the extension through the 2029-30 season now in place, Montreal’s young core has another key piece committed. And on Thursday. Dobes made it plain what he expects from the next chapter: a group kept together. a clearer mind between the pipes. and the chance to chase something long promised in Montreal.

Goalies always get paid, but 5.36 mil seems wild.
So he’s basically locked up until 2029 and they’re betting on him? I mean he did good this year but goalies can fall off fast.
Not gonna lie the Zoom call part was probably just PR. I feel like if he was really that good they’d have him as starter from day 1. Also how is Montembeault gone then? I’m confused.
5.36 aav for a goalie that’s like 25?? That’s actually a pretty good deal if he keeps it up. And starting all 19 playoff games sounds insane. Montreal better not mess it up though, they always do something weird like sign the next guy and forget about the first one. I saw “through 2029-30” and was like wow long time but okay.
