Friday night ended the way it started: fast, loud, and brutal for the Montreal Canadiens.

In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final. they were blown out 6-1 by the Carolina Hurricanes as Carolina closed the series in five games and slammed the door on Montreal’s 2025-26 season. The Hurricanes move on to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights, with Game 1 scheduled for Tuesday, June 2.

For Canada, the timing lands like a familiar heartbreak. Montreal’s elimination stretches a 32nd straight season without a team from Canada winning the Stanley Cup. and it also becomes the 11th straight year without an Original Six winner. The Canadiens were eliminated by Carolina 4-1. the kind of series margin that leaves little room for comfort or “what if” conversations.

Carolina set the tone in the opening frame. scoring three times in the first period and taking control of the game before Montreal could find its rhythm. Taylor Hall scored first after a contested goal was allowed to stand following a goaltender interference challenge by Montreal. The issue centered on contact involving Logan Stankoven and Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes. concerns that did not change the result on the ice: Hall’s goal stood.

Stankoven and Eric Robinson also scored in the opening period as Carolina dominated play and outshot Montreal 15-4. Montreal’s offense never managed to thaw after that early burst, and the series story began to repeat itself: they fell behind early in consecutive games, then couldn’t crawl back.

By the time the final minutes arrived in Game 5, it was clear the Canadiens weren’t going to recover. They finished the series on a four-game losing streak and were outscored 10-1 over the final two games. Over the last seven periods of the series. Montreal managed just one goal. and it came only when the game was already decided.

The postseason slump carried through even at the level of Montreal’s top line. The line of Nick Suzuki. Cole Caufield. and Juraj Slafkovsky finished with six even-strength goals across 19 playoff games. despite scoring 72 during the regular season. That disconnect—regular-season production without postseason translation—hung over Montreal from start to finish.

Montreal did have a chance to believe again after navigating its way through the playoffs with two Game 7 victories against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres. but the East Final never offered the same release valve. Once Carolina gained traction, Montreal couldn’t change the pace or the outcome.

Carolina’s goaltending did much of the damage before the Hurricanes even needed to turn up the volume. In Game 5, Frederik Andersen made 23 saves and allowed just five goals across the series. He recorded two or fewer goals allowed in 12 of his 13 postseason starts and posted three shutouts.

Carolina also brought its own momentum and attitude into the series. The Hurricanes improved to 10-0 in best-of-seven series when leading 3-1. They also extended a run that included 10 consecutive goals during the series before Montreal finally responded.

With the win, Carolina reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years, last doing so in 2006.

The sequence is stark: Montreal’s season ends after a 6-1 Game 5 loss. Carolina wraps the Eastern Conference Final in five. and the Canadiens’ offense fades when it matters most—leaving the national drought to continue and the Hurricanes to set up a final with the Vegas Golden Knights. beginning Tuesday. June 2.
