World Cup: Canada will only go as far as its fans will take them

“When we scored, even before we scored … you can see we’re creating a movement, we’re creating a culture, and I hope it keeps beating because we’re going to need it. We want this. We want our country to be behind us. We want them to be proud. This is why we run so much. This is why we push every day. So, as much as they can be proud of us and keep supporting like this today, just as a football player, that’s all

we can ask.” Marsch marvelled at how Toronto had been alive all week. When asked about the numerous celebrities in attendance — including Ryan Reynolds and Conor McDavid — he revealed his fandom. “Wait, Mike Myers was here? Oh, sweet!” he said. But it was about the rest of us that he had the most to say. “All the red jerseys were outstanding,” he said. “How awesome was that to look around and see all those red jerseys, the sea of red in the stadium,

and (hear them) push the team from the start of the match to make them feel loved, make them feel confidence, and really make them feel the home crowd. “That was a big factor in why we were able to get the point today.” The team hopped on a plane Saturday to leave the region that more than half of the 26 players cite as their home, getting ready for two games in at B.C. Place: June 18 against Qatar and June 24 versus Switzerland.

  1. So is this just saying Canada plays better when there’s celebrities and a bunch of red shirts? I mean I get home crowd vibes, but “creating a movement” feels like marketing. Still, Ryan Reynolds being there probably helps somehow.

  2. I’m confused because they said the point today but then they’re leaving Toronto already. Like what point? Did they win or tie? Also B.C. Place is in BC right? Why do they talk like it’s a whole “region” thing if half the players are from somewhere else.

  3. All I know is Mike Myers being there is wild, and the “sea of red” sounds like a political rally not a soccer match. But hey if the fans were that loud, cool. I still don’t love the whole “we need them to take us far” line, like the team can’t do anything without the crowd. Next game vs Qatar though… that’s gonna be the real test, not celebrity sightings.
