Canada stun South Africa in stoppage time to reach last 16

Stephen Eustaquio’s goal in the second minute of stoppage time sent Canada into the World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history, ending a night that had been tense, tense, and often ugly against South Africa. Jesse Marsch—back in the United States af

For 91 minutes. Canada and South Africa looked like they were bracing for the inevitable—extra time. then penalties. then the kind of nightmare that turns a World Cup into a test of nerves. Then, in the second minute of stoppage time, the ball was cleared only as far as Canada midfielder Stephen Eustaquio.

He brought it down and fired home from outside the box. Canada didn’t just win—Eustaquio’s strike became the biggest goal in the country’s history. taking them into the last 16 for the very first time. For anyone who thought they’d have to sit through the full roulette of a knockout tie, it was salvation.

Jesse Marsch reacted exactly like a coach trying to outrun emotion. He gathered his players and staff in a huddle. reached for the right words. and told them: “You are Canadian heroes.” He added: “This sport has a big future because of you.” It was theatrical. sure. Marsch has always lived in that space.

He also had plenty of personal reasons to feel the weight of the moment. Shortly after full-time, he stretched his arms out, stared up to the heavens, and soaked up what had just happened. When he finally calms down. the Canada boss will have something to breathe about—Canada had needed this. and they had delivered it in the cruelest possible way for South Africa.

The route to this win had been complicated. Canada had failed to top Group B. and it meant this match—against a team that. like Canada. was making the knockout rounds for the first time—was the price. For both nations, it was the first time either had reached the knockout stage in a combined seven attempts. It also marked another break from tradition: never before had a World Cup host nation played on foreign soil.

For South Africa and Canada, the stakes were clear from the start. But the football did not match the occasion. The match between the teams stunk the place out for 91 minutes, with fans booing large chunks of both halves. It became. in effect. a miserable advert for Gianni Infantino’s expansion project—though Marsch didn’t look like he cared about the broader noise once the final whistle arrived.

His story, though, has been tangled well beyond this pitch.

Marsch had been devastated after being snubbed for the USA job in 2023. Canada’s trip north offered him a chance to hop over the border and show his countrymen what he could do. Yet it wasn’t what many in the American crowd had hoped to see. The sight of Marsch singing the Canadian national anthem didn’t help the relationship with his compatriots. already strained after he missed out on the USMNT job and then claimed American players had to be “begged” to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”.

The match itself delivered little comfort for his doubters before the late twist. The first real drama arrived after 44 minutes. From a Canada corner, Moise Bombito’s header was cleared off the line before Tajon Buchanan’s shot was saved. Moments later, Richie Laryea went down in the box; replays showed that Khuliso Mudau’s boot brushed the ball.

At halftime, Marsch didn’t sit back. He stormed on to the pitch and had to be restrained, with particular concern about Alphonso Davies. The Canada captain missed the group stages due to a hamstring issue. Marsch had insisted he was ready to play, and the Bayern Munich star was “truly available” for this one. Still, Davies didn’t make it off the bench until 15 minutes from time.

Marsch won’t care about the earlier chaos now. Canada became the better side once the pressure built, particularly after Davies took the armband off Eustaquio. But it was the midfielder—again, Eustaquio—who ultimately decided it.

Afterward, Marsch tried to place the win in a broader emotional frame. He said: “I am American and I’m proud to be American but I do think that the ideals and the characteristics of Canadian people fit me really well.” He spoke about the traits he believes Canada values—kindness. generosity. and how the country is described as welcoming to outsiders.

He also addressed the noise aimed at Americans. “And sometimes I know that Americans, we get a certain rap for being boisterous, for being arrogant, for being outwardly vocal,” Marsch said. “And I know that in many ways that does describe me – or at least people love to describe me that way.”

Then he drew a hard line under what matters next: “But again, I don’t give a s***. All I care about is working with the teams I work with and the players I work with and helping them be the best that they can be.”

Canada’s history now has a name on it: Stephen Eustaquio.

The next chapter comes fast. Marsch’s team will now face the Netherlands or Morocco in the last 16, with the venue set in Houston. For one night at least. the boos and the tensions and the angry halftime scenes all got drowned out by a stoppage-time strike that changed everything—without even giving the match time to settle into extra time.

  1. I swear every WC match turns into chaos and then boom stoppage time. Canada finally got it but South Africa looked like they were done like 10 minutes before the goal. Wild.

  2. Eustaquio just randomly shot outside the box and it went in? I mean I guess it happens but I feel like South Africa messed up the clearance more than Canada being good. Also “last 16” sounds like the semifinals? I’m probably wrong lol.

  3. The coaches hugging and saying they’re heroes is always so dramatic but honestly I don’t blame them. I watched like half and thought it was going to penalties for sure, then that late goal happened and I was like wow. Also Canada in last 16 for the first time?? That’s kinda crazy, feels like they should’ve been there earlier. South Africa got robbed.
