Canada draws Morocco in Round of 16 after win over Netherlands on penalties

Canada vs – Canada will face Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16 after Morocco edged the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Monterrey on Monday night.

When Monday night finally spilled into penalties. the first thing you could feel was relief—then the kind that turns into dread as every kick counts. The Netherlands led 1-0 into stoppage time in Monterrey. but Issa Diop headed home a picture-perfect ball into the box to equalize. The match stayed locked at 1-1 after extra time, and Morocco’s penalty takers found the edge.

Morocco will now play Canada in the Round of 16 on Saturday afternoon in Houston. after Soufiane Rahimi. Chemsdine Talbi. and Ismael Saibari scored for Morocco in the shootout. The Netherlands’ path ends in the same place every fan fears when the clock won’t move: the moment the game becomes a test of nerve.

For Canada, the opponent is one they know. Morocco and Canada were in the same group at the 2022 World Cup, and Morocco won 2-1 on Dec. 1—before going on to finish fourth in Qatar. That history hangs over this matchup now. with Morocco coming through Group C by finishing second behind Brazil on goal differential.

Morocco’s tournament run in this World Cup began with two wins and a draw for seven points in the preliminary stage. In Group C, they ultimately reached the knockout round by the narrowest margin—second place behind Brazil—while Canada’s own story played out differently.

Canada advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in the tournament’s knockout phase. In group play, they opened with a draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina at Toronto Stadium. Then came the kind of result that changes everything: a 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver that all but ensured they’d progress. But Canada couldn’t win Group B, falling 2-1 to Switzerland last week in their preliminary-round finale.

The turnaround came in the Round of 32. Canada beat South Africa 1-0 on Sunday afternoon, with a stoppage-time winner from Stephen Eustaquio.

There’s a practical reason this matchup feels charged beyond the scorelines. TSN Soccer Analyst Jason deVos pointed to how familiarity could matter. saying. “I think from a familiarity perspective. the team that played against Morocco. there are still a lot of players who are very familiar with this Moroccan side. Lot of players from Morocco who are still in the team [from 2022] at this World Cup.”.

That familiarity doesn’t erase the gap on paper. Morocco are the sixth-ranked side as of FIFA’s latest rankings, while Canada sits 30th.

The matchup in Houston still carries its own momentum from the way it was earned. Morocco carried a two-goal lead early in their 2-1 group-stage win over Canada in 2022. then overcame an own-goal near halftime to hold onto the result. Now. after a 1-0 lead that slipped away in stoppage time against the Netherlands—and after extra time produced nothing—Morocco has one more hurdle to clear: a Canada side that earned its place by finding a way through Group B and then stepping up in the Round of 32.
