JACKSONVILLE – The early message is clear and consistent.
It’s the message that defined the Jaguars’ 2026 offseason – and as Liam Coen sees it, it remains the theme entering his second training camp as the Jaguars’ head coach.
What’s past is past, and what matters is now.
“We haven’t done anything to rest on our laurels here,” Coen said Wednesday.
Coen spoke to the media shortly after a 90-minute unpadded practice at the Miller Electric Center on Day 1 of 2026 Training Camp, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence speaking shortly thereafter and emphasizing the same message.
“You can’t carry anything over,” Lawrence said.
Coen’s said his message to the team Tuesday evening was, “Let’s go earn something.'”
The Jaguars retained most starters and front-line contributors from 2025, also retaining offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile.
“Nothing in this league is given,” Coen said. “Every year is a brand-new year. We have a lot of returning, a lot of coaches returning, a lot of staff members returning, a lot of players returning. But we have to treat it as new.
“We have to reconnect our relationships and be intentional about the way that we communicate and practice and meet with each other.”
The Jaguars won the AFC South title in 2025 with a 13-4 record that marked the second-most victories in a season in franchise history. They haven’t made back-to-back postseason appearances since winning AFC Central titles in 1998 and 1999.
“We’re not in a place to hang out and just kind of chill,” Coen said. “Everything we’re doing is trying to attack an edge. Last year was about finding an edge and creating an edge. And now we are attacking these edges with a relentless pursuit.”
The Jaguars made playoff appearances in 2005 and 2007, winning AFC South titles in 2017 and 2022. They missed the playoffs the following season all four times.
“No matter how good or bad you were the year before, it’s a fresh start, it’s a new year,” Lawrence said. “For any team, any year, that’s always what you have to do.
“For our team to start really from scratch that mindset of we have to earn it, the way we prepare now until the season starts. It already started in April, but from now until the season starts, that’s what’s going to earn us the right to win these games in the fall.”
Coen, too, addressed the scheduling and logistics facing the team with renovations to EverBank Stadium that will result in the Stadium of the Future opening in 2028. The Jaguars will play six regular-season games at EverBank Stadium in 2026 and none in 2027.
“We’re not going to use it as an excuse,” Coen said. “We’re not going to use it as a ‘but.’ It is what it is. Our mindset and mentality are going to be, ‘Drop us off in a plane anywhere, and we’ll go play you.’
“At the end of the day, we want to go play anywhere, anytime, anybody – doesn’t matter. Our mindset is we have to go prove it and go earn it because consistency is the truest measure of performance.”
