Cambridge police fatally shoot man allegedly armed with loaded gun, DA says – The Boston Globe

Cambridge police shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a loaded gun at officers on Temple Street Friday night, law enforcement officials said.

Several police officers involved in the shooting were taken to the hospital “as a precaution,” Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Pauline Wells said in joint statement issued early Saturday morning.

They were treated and released, the statement said.

The man who was fatally shot was not immediately identified.

The shooting followed an altercation on Temple Street, where police responded shortly after 8 p.m. to a report of “suspicious individuals located in a loading dock/parking lot behind area businesses,” who had been in the area for awhile, the statement said.

Officers responded and spoke to the individuals, officials said.

A man in his 60s who was seated in a vehicle when police arrived “allegedly exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at officers,” according to the statement.

Officers attempted to “physically disarm“ the man “and multiple shots were fired striking the individual,” the statement said. “A loaded firearm was taken from the individual.”

Medical aid was provided but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The statement did not say how many officers were involved in the shooting.

Law enforcement investigators were expected to remain on the scene overnight.

Temple Street, located off Massachusetts Avenue near Central Square, was closed, officials said.

Ryan’s office, State Police detectives assigned to her office and Cambridge police are investigating.

The investigation will include witness inerviews and a review of all available video, officials said.

The officers who responded were wearing body cameras. “That footage is also being reviewed,” the statement said.

No further information was released.
