Cal Raleigh sparks return as Mariners beat Orioles

Cal Raleigh returned from the injured list and broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single as Logan Gilbert struck out a season-high 10 in seven innings, lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

SEATTLE — Cal Raleigh walked back into the middle of the lineup after a long absence, and the moment mattered.

In his return from the injured list. Raleigh delivered a two-run single that turned a tight game into the kind of cushion teams want. Logan Gilbert responded with dominant control on the mound. striking out a season-high 10 batters in seven strong innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Seattle’s offense came in measured bursts. Julio Rodríguez had an RBI single for the Mariners, who hold a slim lead in the AL West.

Gilbert (5-4) stitched together his best stretch by combining with two relievers on a three-hitter. The Orioles pushed at the start—Gilbert allowed a leadoff double to Taylor Ward and a two-out RBI single to Samuel Basallo in the first—but after that. his next move was to stop the bleeding. He retired his next 16 batters until the seventh, when he hit Pete Alonso with a pitch to start the frame.

Raleigh’s return finally broke things open. Last year’s AL MVP runner-up, Raleigh had been sidelined since May 14 because of an oblique strain. In the seventh. batting from the right side against reliever Grant Wolfram with the bases loaded and one out. the switch-hitter sent a line drive to center field. It scored Victor Robles and Colt Emerson to make it 3-1.

From there, Seattle protected the lead. Eduard Bazardo pitched a perfect eighth, and Andrés Muñoz worked a one-hit ninth for his 11th save.

The Mariners tied the game in the third. Rodríguez lined a two-out single after Orioles starter Brandon Young (5-2) walked Miles Mastrobuoni and J.P. Crawford with one out.

Young’s night ended with damage that had been building—he gave up three runs and four hits in six-plus innings and was removed after allowing an infield single to Robles and another single to Emerson in the seventh.

Crawford finished 1 for 2 with two walks in his return from the injured list, but Baltimore couldn’t find another swing that matched Raleigh’s.

After Tuesday’s result, the matchup is set for Wednesday: Orioles RHP Kyle Bradish (3-7, 4.30 ERA) faces Mariners RHP George Kirby (5-6, 4.07).

  1. So was he injured or like suspended? I feel like I saw something about him not playing since May and then BAM two runs. Also 10 strikeouts is crazy but I’m not gonna lie I only read the headline.

  2. I don’t get how Logan Gilbert got season-high 10 when they still gave up that first double and RBI. Seems like he struggled early then fixed it? Like the pitching math don’t add up to me. Either way I’m glad Raleigh did something because the Orioles always scare me.

  3. Oblique strain?? Isn’t that like back stuff? My cousin had one of those and couldn’t even swing a bat. Also why is it saying “protect the lead” like it’s a close game the whole time, it ended 3-1… boring win tbh but congrats Mariners.
