Cal Poly Takes Perfect Start to San Jose State Saturday Evening – Cal Poly

Junior wide receiver Tayvion McCoy’s Cal Poly debut against Idaho included 10 catches for 170 yards and the game-winning reception with nine seconds to play. The Ventura College transfer enters Saturday’s matchup at San Jose State ranked 20th in FCS with 92.0 receiving yards per game. A transfer from Western Michigan, fifth-year receiver Ray Hall’s second appearance for Cal Poly during Saturday’s win against Central Washington included 125 yards and his first two collegiate touchdown receptions. 

MUSTANGS GAIN GROUND ON THE BALLOT

Receiving votes in a national poll for the first time in 10 years, Cal Poly collected 46 points Monday in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll and sits just 18 votes behind No. 25 Harvard. Cal Poly also improved to 44 points in the AFCA Top 25 poll (27 back of No. 25 Abilene Christian). The Mustangs last collected national poll votes in 2016 with Cal Poly climbing as high as No. 14 en route to an FCS Playoff berth. 

CAL POLY VERSUS SAN JOSE STATE

The Mustangs have dropped all four matchups at San Jose State as a Division I opponent with the two programs last meeting in 2023. San Jose State leads the all-time series, 13-3, dating to the initial meeting in 1923. Cal Poly’s last victory against the Spartans was a 10-6 road win on Oct. 11, 1958. The two sides wouldn’t meet again until 2006. 

CAL POLY VERSUS FBS OPPOSITION

Cal Poly has lost its previous 11 matchups against FBS foes with Cal Poly’s last victory a 24-22 triumph at Wyoming on Sept. 15, 2012. Since transitioning to Division I ahead of the 1994 season, Cal Poly has defeated four other FBS opponents in San Diego State (2006, 2008), UTEP (2003) and New Mexico State (1997).
