Caitlin Clark sits out Fever-Fire with back issue

Caitlin Clark was ruled out for the Indiana Fever’s Wednesday matchup against the Portland Fire at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, with head coach Stephanie White citing a lingering back issue and a plan to manage her workload amid a tight stretch of games.
When the Indiana Fever took the floor at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday night, Caitlin Clark wasn’t among them.
Indiana entered the matchup against the Portland Fire with a 2-2 record. and Clark had been driving the offense early in the 2026 season. Through this start, she was averaging 24.3 points, 9.0 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game. But Clark appeared on the injury report leading up to the game and was ultimately ruled out by Fever head coach Stephanie White because of a lingering back issue.
White pointed to the reality of managing that problem throughout the season, including the fact that it has already required multiple in-game adjustments this year. Both Clark and White have largely downplayed the issue publicly, even as it continued to sit on the injury radar.
Fever beat reporter Scott Agness characterized Wednesday’s decision as part of a “strategic management plan for the season.” White offered a similar message with a clear objective: “She’s healthy. we’re not managing anything. ” White said. “This is just a back issue that we want to make sure we give the time to be ready.”.
It’s the kind of decision that carries weight for a team that has leaned on Clark’s production from the start. But last season is part of the backdrop. Clark appeared in just 13 games after suffering a season-ending groin injury. and it was always likely Indiana would take a cautious approach bringing her back to full form—especially with a back issue now in the mix.
Wednesday’s game also landed inside a demanding schedule. The Fever had played their fourth contest in eight days, with another game set for Friday night against the Golden State Valkyries. After that, Indiana gets nearly a full week off before its next game comes the following Thursday.
The sequence of facts is straightforward: a lingering back issue. a ruling out for the immediate game. and a calendar that leaves little room for uncertainty. For the Fever. the decision isn’t just about one night—it’s about using the remaining weeks of the early season to make sure Clark is ready when the pace finally loosens.
