NEW YORK — Byron Buxton tried to do what he does best in the first inning, but by the time he was tagged out, the hip had other plans.
The Minnesota Twins all-star centre fielder left Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees after reaggravating a hip injury. It happened early, right after Buxton reached on an infield single to the third base side of the mound. He was thrown out attempting to steal second base on a headfirst slide during a full-count pitch that Kody Clemens struck out on. Before that, Buxton had already attempted to steal second, but Clemens fouled off a pitch.
Buxton appeared to grimace after being tagged out by New York shortstop Anthony Volpe, and when the Twins took the field, he was replaced by rookie Kyler Fedko. The play carried a rare streak-breaking detail: it marked Buxton’s first time caught stealing in 37 tries since May 1, 2024.
The injury adds another layer to a season that has already included two separate hip issues for the 32-year-old. Buxton was named Saturday as a starter for the AL all-star team. and at the time of this setback he was hitting .271 with 25 homers and 45 RBIs in 75 games. His most recent stretch also underlined how much the hip has shaped his timeline—he drove in two runs in Saturday’s 11-4 win after missing the previous four games with right hip impingement.
Last season, Buxton appeared in 126 games, his most since appearing in 140 games in 2017. He batted .264 with career bests of 35 homers and 83 RBIs.
For the Twins, Sunday’s moment wasn’t just about a single out at second. It was a sudden reminder of how quickly health can interrupt a season—and how much hinges on whether Buxton can recover again without losing more time.
