The overnight wreck on southbound Interstate 95 in Virginia didn’t just snap traffic into chaos—it left five people dead, including a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, after a bus slammed into vehicles slowing down in a work zone.
The chain-reaction crash happened early Friday, around 2:35 AM, in Stafford County near Quantico, according to state police. Investigators say the bus struck multiple vehicles already slowing ahead of a construction area, setting off a fiery collision.
Police report that the impact engulfed one car in flames, and four of the victims were inside that vehicle. The names and ages released by authorities show the dead included a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy—all from Greenfield, Massachusetts.
A fifth person died as well: a 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, who died after her SUV was also hit by the bus. Officials say all five fatalities were occupants of vehicles struck in the collision.
In all, 44 people were transported to hospitals for treatment, including three who remain in critical condition. The numbers underscore the toll of the crash. but the investigation is focused on the moment that led to the impact—why the bus hit traffic that was already slowing in a construction zone.
Authorities say the cause of the crash is under investigation, and potential charges against the bus driver are being reviewed. The driver has been identified as 48-year-old Jing S. Dong of Staten Island, New York. Investigators are still working to determine exactly what led to the bus striking slowed traffic in the early morning hours.

Why were they driving so slow in a construction zone at 2:35am?? Like if you can’t see then get off the road. Sounds like poor decisions all around.
Bus driver charged? honestly that part feels weird bc it says they were already slowing. So like was it the bus speeding or did nobody have lights or cones out? Smh.
I’m confused… the article says 5 died and then also says 44 hospitalized, but it also says one car engulfed in flames and 4 victims in that car. If all 5 were in vehicles struck then where did the other person die from? Doesn’t really add up.
RIP to those kids. I hate that it’s always some work zone at night too. If they’re reviewing potential charges against Jing Dong, maybe he fell asleep or something, but like how do they know yet? Either way I-95 in VA is a nightmare.
