A man died at Burning Man on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency at the festival, organizers said, and rain Friday turned the desert playa into mud and temporarily shut the festival’s entrance and exit.
The Burning Man Project said the participant in his mid-50s received lifesaving measures immediately and was transported to the onsite emergency center, where he was pronounced dead.
Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen said deputies received a report of a man found unresponsive on one of the festival’s streets. He was transported to the on-site medical provider and pronounced dead by an on-site doctor, Allen said.

Allen said there did not appear to be any external foul play. The final cause of death will be determined after the medical examiner’s report, he said.
The death came as the annual gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert was also dealing with a familiar hazard: rapidly changing weather.
Rain on Friday morning forced the closure of the entrance and exit to Black Rock City, according to event officials. Organizers asked people who had not yet arrived to remain in Reno and delay their trip until the gate reopened.
The Black Rock City Municipal Airport was also closed because of rain as of 5 a.m. Friday.

Burning Man is built on a dry lake bed, and wet conditions can quickly make the playa difficult or impossible for vehicles to cross.
This year’s Burning Man began Aug. 30 and is scheduled to continue through Sept. 7. The 2026 theme is “Axis Mundi” (“World Axis”), with tens of thousands of people living temporarily in Black Rock City.
The weather disruption follows a series of other incidents during this year’s festival.
As of Friday morning, 34 people had been arrested at Burning Man on suspicion of drug sales or trafficking, along with one domestic violence arrest, Allen said. He added that deputies were not targeting people simply for using drugs.
On Tuesday, an attendee was seriously injured after falling from the 55-foot Nest Tower at the Square One camp. SFGATE reported that the man fell two levels and struck a metal crossbar before emergency responders rescued him from the structure and transported him to Rampart, the festival’s temporary hospital. Burning Man organizers also evicted a Christian missionary camp earlier this week.
Organizers said the group had received multiple warnings over alleged violations involving privacy and consent. Members of the group disputed that explanation and accused Burning Man of targeting them because of their religious beliefs.
The festival is also still under the shadow of last year’s killing of Vadim Kruglov, 37, who was found fatally stabbed inside a tent on Aug. 30, 2025. No arrest has been announced in that case.
Despite the difficult conditions, Burning Man continues to operate as a temporary city devoted to art, performances, camps and large-scale installations.

The installation stands 30 meters long and 15 meters high and is designed as an immersive work, with a cable stretched between the two broken sections for a planned tightrope performance.
The Burning Man Project said its crisis-support resources remain available around the clock for participants affected by the death, including Black Rock Rangers and the Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support team.
