On Wednesday, the Bruins moved again in the middle of the offseason, pulling defenseman Will Borgen into their orbit in a trade with the Rangers. The deal is being reported as Boston giving up a 2027 second-round pick and a 2028 conditional third-round pick for Borgen.

The conditions matter: the 2028 pick becomes Boston’s second-round selection if the Bruins make the Eastern Conference Final in either 2026-27 or 2027-28 and if Borgen plays in 50 percent of Boston’s playoff games.

Borgen, 29, is expected to slot into the Bruins’ top-four on defense as a physical, right-shot blueliner. That right-shot role has been largely vacant since Brandon Carlo was traded to Toronto in March 2025.

Boston’s picture of what it’s getting is also clear on paper. Borgen is 6-foot-3 and projects as more of a physical. stay-at-home defender. but he’s also expected to keep moving well in games. NHL Edge tracking data show Borgen was in the 75th percentile of NHLers in max skating speed at 22.30 miles per hour. His four skating bursts over 22 miles per hour placed him in the 91st percentile of players in the league.

Last season with the Rangers, Borgen appeared in 75 games and produced five goals and 10 assists while averaging 18:03 of ice time per game. He’s signed for the next four years with a $4.1 million cap hit.

The acquisition lands at a time when Boston already has added depth on the blue line earlier this week. signing Connor Clifton and Jordan Harris. With Borgen expected to join that group as a top-four option. the Bruins are now balancing an increasing roster of defensemen while leaning into a specific need: a right-shot presence they haven’t had consistently since Carlo’s move to Toronto.
