The morning after Nateal Campbell was found dead inside her Buckhead townhome, police moved quickly—enough for an arrest to follow before the day was out.

Nateal Campbell, 71, was found unresponsive Tuesday in her Atlanta home after a concerned family member requested a welfare check, according to WSB-TV. When officers arrived, the Atlanta Police Department said a male “appeared to have barricaded himself inside the home,” and he was later arrested.

That arrest led to charges for Calais Campbell’s brother. Online jail records show Ciarre Campbell was booked into the Fulton County Jail on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and gun possession after midnight.

Police said the investigation also includes prior contact with the same address. Atlanta Police Department Lt. Christapher Butler said there was a call to Nateal’s address in April for “a possible arson incident. ” and that there were “indications” of possible mental health issues with someone at the address. It is unclear whether Ciarre lived with his mother.

Ciarre Campbell’s attorney. Jay Abt. spoke to WSB-TV but did not comment on whether Ciarre lived with Nateal or on any mental-health details. Abt instead said his client is innocent, adding: “We look forward to his day in court. I’m honored to defend him and. most importantly. the Campbell family. I’m asking on their behalf that the public respect their privacy at this time.”.

Abt said police obtained search warrants for the Buckhead home, clothing, and DNA.

In a statement shared by the Campbell family, they asked for privacy while the investigation continues. “While the details of her passing are still being investigated. we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father. her beloved Chuck. and in the arms of our Lord and Savior. Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”.

Nateal Campbell was at the center of her son Calais Campbell’s public life as well. Calais was named the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year after founding the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation with his mother and seven siblings. The foundation teaches critical life skills to young people.

Calais Campbell, a Baltimore Ravens player, was drafted in 2008 as a second-round pick out of the University of Miami and is back with the Ravens on a one-year deal. He has previously said this upcoming season may be his last.

The case has introduced a stark, painful turn for a family that had built a charitable legacy around Nateal Campbell’s role—while the legal process begins for Ciarre Campbell, charged in connection with her death.
