The Denver Broncos encountered an injury concern during Monday’s first padded training camp practice when starting center Luke Wattenberg left the field after going down during a one-on-one drill. Trainers attended to Wattenberg, and he did not return for the remainder of the session, with Alex Forsyth taking over at center.
Head coach Sean Payton said after practice that the team will evaluate Wattenberg but added that he believes the starting center will be fine, offering an encouraging early update as the team awaits a clearer assessment of the injury.
Wattenberg, a fifth-round selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, claimed Denver’s starting center job in 2024. He started 13 games that season before making 15 regular-season starts in 2025. His recent production has made him an essential part of the Broncos’ offensive line. The 28-year-old earned a 70.9 overall PFF grade in 2025, ranking ninth among 40 qualified centers. His 71.0 pass-blocking grade ranked 11th at the position, and he did not allow a sack during the season.
Denver also received positive injury news Monday. Outside linebacker Drew Sanders returned after missing practices on Friday and Saturday with an undisclosed injury, while rookie wide receiver Joseph Manjack was back after dealing with a back issue.
Elsewhere, outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman worked on a side field with a wrapped leg because of what Mike Klis described as a slight hamstring issue. Tight end Caleb Lohner remained out with a knee injury, while offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo (knee) stayed on the PUP list and linebacker Jordan Turner remained on the NFI list as the Broncos prepare for six straight practice days before next week’s preseason opener.
