Brewers call up Drew Rom as Fitzpatrick lands IL

For Saturday’s matchup against the Rockies, the Brewers didn’t just shuffle their bullpen plans — they opened the door for Drew Rom.
Milwaukee selected Rom, a left-hander, ahead of the game. That move came with a clear vacancy: Brian Fitzpatrick was placed on the 15-day injured list with an elbow injury. The Brewers had room on the 40-man roster, so there was no corresponding roster move needed.
Rom’s last major league pitching came in 2023 with the Cardinals, when he struggled to an 8.02 ERA over eight starts. In 2024, he didn’t pitch at all in the big leagues due to a biceps injury. Even when he got back to throwing, additional health issues kept him to seven minor league appearances last season. Rom later reconnected with Milwaukee, latching on as a minor league free agent in December.
What brought him back to the majors was what’s happened since. In Triple-A Nashville this year, Rom has turned into a full-time relief option with a standout stretch: a 3.04 ERA across 22 appearances. He’s also posted a career-high 33.9% strikeout rate.
The change shows up in the stuff, too. During his MLB stint with St. Louis, Rom’s four-seamer barely cracked 90 mph. With the Sounds, it has ticked up to an average of 92.5 mph. His sweeper is getting harder as well: it averaged 79.4 mph in 2023, and it’s been up at 83.1 mph at Triple-A this season.
The Brewers aren’t just replacing innings — they’re replacing momentum. Fitzpatrick’s first taste of the majors has been strong. He allowed just one earned run across 6 2/3 innings out of Milwaukee’s bullpen. He was optioned in mid-May and only recently rejoined the big-league squad. Friday’s outing against Colorado gave him a perfect moment: he threw a perfect inning before the elbow injury ended his run.
The sequence is stark. Rom’s return comes on the heels of an elbow injury that cut short Fitzpatrick’s recent progress — and the roster spot opens because Milwaukee has space to bring Rom straight into the mix.

So they just… pulled a guy off Triple-A? Sounds like more bullpen chaos lol.
Elbow injury again?? I swear pitchers can’t even make it half a season these days. Hopefully Rom stays healthy this time.
Wait Rom is the one who had the biceps issue right? Like the article says he missed time, so why is he suddenly “momentum” now, that doesn’t make sense. Also 90 mph four-seamer to 92.5 sounds fake, either way.
I watched Fitzpatrick for a bit and a “perfect inning” is cool but the elbow thing sounds brutal. Brewers basically got lucky he lasted as long as he did. Rom coming back after not pitching in 2024 kinda feels like a last-minute fix for the Rockies series too.
