The Atlanta Braves have added another experienced arm to their bullpen, acquiring left-handed reliever Brent Suter from the Los Angeles Angels in a surprising trade.
Atlanta is sending infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr. to Los Angeles in the deal, according to ESPN. The move gives the Braves a versatile veteran pitcher for the stretch run, while the Angels receive a young infielder with major league experience and remaining upside.
Suter, 36, has made 41 appearances for the Angels this season, including three starts. He owns a 4.12 ERA and 1.26 WHIP across 63 1/3 innings, recording 55 strikeouts against only 17 walks.

Suter has also been effective recently. He did not allow an earned run over his final three appearances for Los Angeles, covering 4 1/3 innings. That stretch included a two-inning start against the Milwaukee Brewers in which he surrendered no hits.
Atlanta can use Suter to bridge the middle innings, provide length following a short start or handle left-handed hitters. His low walk rate is another appealing quality for a contender attempting to protect leads during the final two months.
Suter has issued only 17 walks in 63 1/3 innings this season. Although he is not an overpowering strikeout pitcher, his unusual delivery and ability to change speeds have helped him remain effective through 11 major league seasons.
