The Lifestyle Ultra family includes a soundbar. a subwoofer. and a smart speaker. but the smart speaker is the one that drove my week-long test.. Bose positions the Lifestyle Ultra as a whole-home audio option with smart-home features at a time when more consumers are gravitating toward multi-room setups.
The pitch is confident, but it isn’t cheap. The Lifestyle Ultra Speaker costs $50 to $100+ more than comparable options from Apple, Sonos, and Amazon. Still, it brings a bundle of connectivity options that can matter as much as audio performance.
It’s a true Wi‑Fi smart speaker, so it isn’t portable—it needs a power source.. Bose pairs that with a three-speaker configuration: two front-facing speakers and one upfiring speaker. designed to fill a room with volume.. There’s also the expectation of “height” effects. but Bose’s upfiring speaker isn’t a dedicated Atmos height channel. and a single speaker isn’t Atmos-compatible.
Instead, Bose leans on its proprietary TrueSpatial technology for added depth and space.. I didn’t find TrueSpatial essential. but it does come through in a way that avoids the overly artificial feel some people associate with Bose’s Immersive Audio in its headphones and earbuds.. Even so. a singular upfiring speaker doesn’t deliver the kind of full immersion you might want from multi-speaker height processing—something Bose helps address by offering additional Lifestyle Ultra Speaker units and the soundbar.

With Alexa and Alexa+ available on the US version. plus AirPlay and Google Cast for casting from Android and iOS-compatible services. the speaker can be grouped with other Wi‑Fi speakers.. In my case. I grouped the kitchen’s Sonos Era 100 with the Bose Lifestyle Ultra across rooms—placing the Bose in my upstairs office—and it worked like a charm.
One detail that adds flexibility for mixed homes is a 3.5mm aux-in port for wired connectivity with analog devices like a turntable.. And with two Lifestyle Ultra speakers paired together. they behave similarly to Sonos’s offerings: you can switch them from standalone smart speakers into rear speakers for a home theater configuration. or use them as individual left- and right-channel audio sources.. You can also place several around the house for multi-room audio.
The ordering matters here: Bose leans on TrueSpatial and a V‑shaped tuning to deliver a lively sound. while the connectivity stack—Wi‑Fi streaming. AirPlay. and Google Cast—plus stereo pairing and a 3.5mm aux-in port creates multiple ways to place the Lifestyle Ultra into a mixed setup like the one that included a Sonos Era 100.
Bose’s buying advice to me was simple: these speakers are designed for people who want something that works right out of the box. especially if they appreciate simplicity and modern design.. You can use nearly any brand of phone. laptop. or tablet with the Lifestyle Ultra Speaker. and it integrates into an existing home audio ecosystem quickly.
That said, the “works everywhere” story comes with trade-offs.. The Lifestyle Ultra Speaker is a solid pick for mixed-device ecosystems. but it’s also aimed at listeners who aren’t huge fans of voice assistants—since only Alexa and Alexa+ are available to US consumers.. And while some alternatives like an Apple HomePod or a Sonos Era 100 are cheaper. the source lineup notes that those options can come with hardware and software limitations and operate within closed ecosystems.
If your home is already a patchwork of brands, the Lifestyle Ultra’s real win is its ability to coexist—without turning multi-room audio into a software project.
