For a month, Bonnie Tyler has been fighting in the background while her fans checked for updates. Now her team is sharing what changed — and what hasn’t.

On June 15, Tyler’s team announced on her official website that she is no longer in her medically induced coma. The statement says she has woken up, but the journey is far from over: she remains in hospital in Portugal, still “very unwell” and in intensive care.

“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal. Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time,” the team wrote.

That slow process has already reshaped her public schedule. The same update says any upcoming shows will be canceled, while the team is hoping that shows scheduled in the fall will still take place.

The family is also asking for space. The statement thanks people sending well-wishes, then adds: “Bonnie’s family continue to ask for privacy and promise that we will issue further updates as soon as there are significant developments to share.”

The medical crisis that led to the coma began earlier in the year. In May, Tyler’s website announced she had been rushed to a hospital in Portugal for emergency surgery for intestinal issues. After that emergency surgery, it was later shared that she was induced into a coma.

The reason for the medically induced coma was explained in earlier reporting tied to Tyler’s situation: her team placed her in that coma after cardiac arrest so she could heal.

Tyler — born Gaynor Hopkins — has been a household name for decades. first breaking through in 1976 with “Lost In France.” She later became a global superstar with songs including “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero.” Her popularity continued through the 1990s in Europe. and she competed in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013. representing the U.K. with “Believe In Me.”.

She kept performing through the 2020s as well and is on the Jubilee Tour. celebrating 50 years since the start of her music career. In January 2025, she told The Times, “Touring keeps me going. I consider myself a working-class girl. and I’ve never stopped working. ” adding that moving her parents from the council house where she was brought up to a cottage in Mumbles is what she is “most proud of. ” and that it “does feel like an achievement to still be wanted by audiences at my age. I’m pretty energetic.”.

Even as her iconic songs stayed alive. Tyler has talked about how “Total Eclipse of the Heart” returns whenever the sky does something dramatic. In April 2024, she told “Good Morning America,” “I still get excited when I hear the song on the radio. Every time the eclipse comes. everyone all over the world. they play ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart. ’ and I never get tired of singing it.”.

In this moment, the spotlight is on the human reality of recovery. Tyler’s team says her condition is improving, but that it is a slow process — and that intensive care in Portugal is still the place where she is being monitored.

For now. she is out of the coma. still very unwell. and her team is canceling upcoming shows while keeping an eye on performances scheduled in the fall. She is married to former Olympic judo competitor and real estate developer Robert Sullivan. and they have been married since July 1973. The couple have no children together and split their time between their homes in Wales and Portugal.
