Bobby Flay tells fans desserts and Asian dishes win

Asked how to beat him on “Beat Bobby Flay,” Bobby Flay pointed to choosing desserts or Asian cuisines—saying the smartest move is picking what he’ll likely struggle with. He also echoed a lesson from past contestants: stop overcomplicating signature dishes.
Bobby Flay doesn’t just cook under pressure—he answers fans under it.
On Thursday. May 21. during Instagram Stories. the celebrity chef was asked a simple challenge: “What’s the smartest strategy to beat you on Beat Bobby Flay?” His answer came fast and specific. “It’s usually picking something I’ll definitely struggle with,” Flay said, adding: “Desserts, Asian cuisines.”.
Flay has been telling viewers for a while what tends to derail contestants. Earlier in March. when asked about a common mistake on the long-running show. he pointed to the way people try to “special” their way out of trouble. “They make a ‘special’ version of their signature dish,” Flay replied. “That’s where it always goes wrong.”.
For him, the message is about keeping control of the variables. The moment a cook strays from what they already know how to do—especially when it’s tied to their own identity—the competition gets riskier.
His approach to challenges even shows up in how he talks about his own comfort zone. When a fan asked whether he welcomes baking on “Beat Bobby Flay,” Flay, 61, didn’t soften the truth. “Not my fave,” he admitted. “I’m a fish out of water, but I enjoy the challenge.”
Flay also used the same Instagram session to revisit how his Q&As work. In an earlier interview with PEOPLE at the 2026 South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF). he said he answers those questions “in less than four minutes. ” with his team providing the prompts. writing them through. and giving them to him so he can “answer them right away” with a goal of keeping the replies spontaneous.
Fans, too, keep circling back to his real life. He said many of the most popular questions are about his girlfriend of a year. fellow Food Network star Brooke Williamson. 47. “I think probably the most popular ones are when people ask me about Brooke and cooking and stuff like that. because for some reason. people are interested in my love life. ” he said. “I’m not really sure why, but they are. So have at it.”.
Flay’s fans weren’t done asking about strategy—just not always the one on his own show. Another of Flay’s Food Network series, BBQ Brawl, premiered its seventh season on May 11. Williamson’s role shifted from judge to team captain, while Flay and Maneet Chauhan returned to lead the other two teams.
After the season premiere, Flay invited viewers to ask him questions about BBQ Brawl on Instagram. One fan asked how he felt about Maneet’s strategy of “using u & Brooke against each other.” Flay’s response stayed short and confident: “Smart strategy. ” he said. “@chefbrookew is focused on winning this thing and @maneetchauhan is the reigning champ. I’m the odd guy out!”.
For Flay, the thread connecting every answer is the same: pick a lane where your opponent hesitates, and don’t try to disguise your strengths with something “special” that you can’t control.
