Blue Jays turn to Braydon Fisher to open finale

Braydon Fisher will serve as the opener for Toronto in Thursday’s series finale against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, with Spencer Miles expected to take over after the top of the order.
The Blue Jays didn’t wait long after Wednesday’s 2-1 win before resetting their plan for Thursday night at Yankee Stadium.
Toronto announced that Braydon Fisher will serve as the opener for the series finale. with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET (4:05 p.m. PT) on Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet+. Fisher will be tasked with handling the top of New York’s order before Spencer Miles is expected to take over for the bulk of the outing.
It’s a familiar role for Fisher. He previously pitched as an opener on April 17 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, delivering a scoreless first inning. On the season, the right-hander is carrying a 3.08 ERA and has recorded 24 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. He also worked in the team’s Monday start versus the Yankees, allowing one hit over 1.2 innings.
Miles, meanwhile, is lined up for Toronto’s vacant rotation spot as the club searches for reinforcements. The plan may hinge on whether Max Scherzer or Shane Bieber—both referenced as potential options given their injuries—can return. Miles is already being managed like a piece the Blue Jays want to deploy with consistency rather than churn.
“You don’t want to move him back and forth too much. If we’re going to do it, try to be consistent with it,” manager John Schneider said Monday.
Miles’ most recent outing came Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. He threw a season-high 3.2 innings and 56 pitches, striking out five and walking two after entering in relief of Mason Fluharty to start the second inning.
