Blue Jays’ Shane Bieber roughed up in Buffalo rehab

Shane Bieber’s move to triple-A Buffalo didn’t come with the clean, controlled outing Toronto wanted as he was hit for three earned runs over 2.2 innings and 59 pitches against Worcester.

Shane Bieber’s rehab plan shifted to triple-A Buffalo on Saturday, the next step in his return for the Toronto Blue Jays after off-season forearm fatigue. The intent was clear: get innings, get rhythm, keep his workload moving in the right direction.

What didn’t go smoothly was the way the Worcester Red Sox made contact once the veteran right-hander got on the mound. Bieber lasted 2.2 innings and threw 59 pitches, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out three and walking none.

The damage started early. In the first inning. with Worcester already down to two outs. Bieber surrendered back-to-back RBI doubles to Matt Thaiss and Vinny Capra. Worcester added to that momentum in the second inning as well. when Tyler McDonough launched a solo homer on a 1-0 fastball over the heart of the zone.

Bieber did manage to escape the second frame after that, and he returned for the third to get two quick outs. But the third inning ended with a Capra single that pushed him to his pitch limit for the day.

Despite the scoreboard stress, Bieber’s workload was specific. He averaged 92.0 m.p.h. on 18 fastballs and mixed in 15 knuckle curves, 11 cutters, eight changeups, and seven sliders. The variety was there—so was the challenge of turning that repertoire into outs under game pressure.

Saturday marked the third rehab start Bieber has made as he works his way back toward the majors. His last outing came with single-A Dunedin on Sunday. when he allowed six hits and five earned runs over 2.1 innings and 49 pitches. He previously pitched two scoreless innings in the Florida Complex League on May 25.

Bieber’s current climb back has been shaped by bigger history than this rehab assignment. The 30-year-old was acquired by Toronto at the trade deadline last season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He then made seven regular-season starts for the Blue Jays, pitching 40.1 innings, striking out 37, and posting a 3.57 ERA.

Saturday’s outing also landed in a busy stretch for Buffalo. Bieber was the third rehabbing starter to appear for the Bisons in the last three days, following Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer, who pitched on Thursday and Friday respectively.

For Bieber, the message from this start is simple and uncomfortable: the arm can be moving forward while the results still refuse to be tidy. Next, he’ll have to keep building without letting a rough outing throw off the larger return plan.
