Blue Jays face rotation puzzle after injury setbacks

Blue Jays – Max Scherzer’s arm and other rotation concerns leave Toronto searching for answers after a loss to Tampa Bay.

A nagging forearm problem just got more complicated for the Toronto Blue Jays, and with the team already short on certainty in its starting rotation, the club now finds itself without an obvious, clean fix.

Max Scherzer’s right forearm is still not responding as quickly as he hoped after he received a cortisone shot last week.. He then took a second step on Monday. this time involving an injection into his right thumb after the digit flared up when he adjusted how he worked to protect the forearm.. Speaking Tuesday. Scherzer said he could not get on track with a proper throwing program. adding that the lack of an identifiable injury on testing has made the situation especially frustrating.

“The MRI is clean. ” Scherzer said. while describing ongoing conversations with multiple pitchers about how to navigate symptoms when there is no clear strain to correct.. His comments also set the tone for Toronto’s broader challenge: when the problem is more uncertain than structural. the usual path forward becomes harder to map.

The Blue Jays’ current rotation questions were sharpened on the field as well.. Toronto lost 7-6 to the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings, marking their third straight loss.. While the defeat does not resolve the pitching health issues driving the rotation planning. it adds pressure to find stabilizing options sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile. the front end of Toronto’s rotation planning took a noticeable turn Monday when the club designated Eric Lauer for assignment.. Manager John Schneider initially floated Spencer Miles—who had impressed in a three-inning opener role ahead of Lauer on Sunday—as a possibility. but he later indicated that the team was leaning toward using Thursday’s off-day to delay the need for a fifth starter until May 19 at Yankee Stadium.

Even that approach, Schneider suggested, would be only a bridge rather than a solution.. Pitching coach Pete Walker was described as gauging how the other starters are feeling and monitoring where each pitcher is in the rhythm of the season. with Schneider stressing that decisions are being made case by case.. That routine-based logic matters more than usual early in the calendar. but it also highlights the limited margin for error when key pieces are in limbo.

Scherzer’s uncertainty is not the only concern shaping the Blue Jays’ rotation outlook.. Jose Berrios visited specialist Dr.. Keith Meister in Texas on Tuesday, while Shane Bieber remains weeks away from returning.. With multiple pitchers tied to different timelines—and at least one whose testing has not revealed a simple answer—Toronto’s staff planning now has to cover a stretch where the usual assumptions about health cannot be relied upon.

Within the organization. Schneider named internal options including triple-A Buffalo bulk arms Chad Dallas and CJ Van Eyk. pointing to the depth the club can access when rotation slots open.. Miles. however. comes with caveats that extend beyond the immediate promise he showed in his recent role: his workload history has been impacted by injuries over the past three seasons. and as a Rule 5 pick. he had not pitched above A-ball before debuting.. Those factors do not rule him out. but they deepen the challenge of turning a temporary answer into something that can last.

Schneider’s comments also underscored why the club may need to be creative even beyond the standard starter-and-reliever division.. The report noted that Toronto could consider using Miles in ways that carry bullpen days for stretches. essentially finding ways to shuffle responsibilities around the rotation gap.. The appeal is clear—internal flexibility can buy time—but the complications remain because the Blue Jays cannot count on everyone staying healthy.

That becomes even more important when considering the example of Corbin. who figures into Toronto’s options in a big way.. Patrick Corbin was signed as a temporary fill-in after the injury to Cody Ponce. but he has since settled into a main role for the team.. Across seven starts. Corbin has posted a 3.93 ERA in 34.1 innings. including a strong stretch of 4.1 innings in a three-run ball against the Rays on Tuesday.. For a pitching staff that needs steadiness, duplicating that production—or replacing it—has become a central question.

The report framed Toronto’s dilemma as an unforgiving mix of time, health uncertainty, and limited guarantees.. Scherzer. reflecting on his own situation. emphasized that in baseball there are no assurances tied to hoping certain players return fully operational.. He suggested that players and teams must go out and take opportunities when they appear. because other options—often made possible by teammates getting chances—can swing results even when the injury list is long.

For Toronto. the rotation vacancy is not just about finding the next starter on paper; it is about managing uncertainty through planning that can withstand setbacks.. With Scherzer trying to resolve throwing limitations despite clean imaging. Berrios still navigating specialist evaluation. Bieber set to return later. and Lauer already off the active roster picture. the Blue Jays’ next decisions carry immediate weight.. With the May 19 trip to Yankee Stadium approaching. the club’s challenge is to bridge the gap without assuming the hardest part will wait until everyone is healthy.
